Oh My God, this is a joke, right? Like that Burt Reynolds photo on April Fool's Day?

Tomorrow morning when I wake up and check NitrateVille I'll see the nice comfy layout again, with the picture of Jimmy Stewart watching The Lodger at the top, right?

That fooled me good! It took me a few days to figure it out.

From the references to blue, I'm guessing they put the default PhpBB3.0 theme up for a bit before the properly monochromatic custom NitrateVille one was installed. I wouldn't know; I was out to dinner the whole time.

In any case, that seems to have been fairly painless all told, I'm sure we'll find some issues or at least differences (one I know about-- if your PM box is full, it no longer automatically deletes the oldest messages but has to be manually cleaned out) and it looks like everyone needs to reupload avatars. (CORRECTION: I turned them on and most should be fine. If yours doesn't display, try reuploading from the User Control Panel.) But hopefully you'll like it... and in any case, we had ta do it!

What?

Okay, one thing I see is that the old ways of embedding videos in posts no longer work. But there will be a new easier way... as soon as I figure out how to activate it. Then we'll probably have to change them by hand when we see them, but that should be easy.

I'm just looking forward into finally finding out who my friends and foes are. For a depressive paranoiac it's ideal.

Okay, perhaps I spoke too soon. The bright blue background I was seeing a couple of hours ago is gone, and the picture of Jimmy Stewart is back at the top. It looks sort of like NitrateVille again. But geez, for a while there the site looked awful. And after what's happened to IMDb I really couldn't handle another ugly re-design of a favorite online destination. This change is connected with enhanced spamblocking, I gather?

If so, it can't be working well. My posts are still getting through.

It was rather strange that when the change was taking place, I could have installed phpBB - the site gave me the option of doing so, which is really bad form security-wise since I'm neither admin nor owner of the site.

Mike,
I don't see anywhere we can hit "go to first unread post" button, is it here?

I think it's the same as before, isn't it? You hit "View Unread posts" and go to the thread. Or am I forgetting how it worked already?

The only difference in that function is the name - `View Unread Posts' used to have a name like `View all threads since last visit'. Functionality and looks are fine from my end.

Okay, we're having a debate behind the scenes about whether there was a way that you could just to the first of several new posts since you last visited. It's crazy I wouldn't be able to say that for sure, but it was so instinctive that now, I really can't remember. Anyone know how that worked?

No, there used to be like a little piece of paper looking type of thing, that when there was a thread that had replies, you hit that and it would take you to the first unread post since the last time you were there.

No, that function, previously described as "since last visit," generates a list of threads that have posts since your last visit. What's missing now is the button that takes you to the first unread post within an individual thread. There's still one that takes you to the very latest post in a thread, but that first-unread function was very useful. I used it all the time.

Yep - now that I look at it, you're right. I didn't realise until I noticed that what appeared to be new posts were actually the first page of a conversation that began in 2009. :)

I've also found that the new equivalent of `View Unread Posts' is occasionally taking me to threads where no new posts have appeared, but I'm sure that's just a teething problem.

When you get that list of threads that have new posts since your last visit, some of the icons in a circle running down the left are animated. I haven't figured out what that means. I do understand the star in some of them, indicating it's a thread you've posted to, though.

If the circle shows an animated scrolling of lines, it means that it is a popular topic.

I think it looks way too cluttered and overdone, like someone who didn't know how to stop after just one font.

Thank The Lord for the nice restful monochrome......I hoped the blue was an interim thing.
I could use some digital restoration myself...

I know you have been and are still working hard on this, Mike. But Jesus Murphy, this is a VERY unappealing look.

I'm not even talking about the blue screen that apparently started up earlier -- I missed that one.

There's WAY too much white space. Boxes are WAY too large. Most avatars are not showing up yet. And it's all WAY too vanilla ... Vanilla Ice, even ... there's nothing in the design or the graphics to suggest this is a movie site. The old version was graphically designed to suggest an old-fashioned movie theatre; there's nothing like that here.

And the stupid spellcheck insists that "theatre" is the wrong spelling. Since when?

Sorry, don't mean to piss on your hard labour, but it's all very unalluring.
