Re: KINDLY SOLVE SIGNED PHOTOS MYSTERY

PostFri May 25, 2012 6:41 am

The second photo is signed by Henri de la Falaise using his aristocratic title Marquis de la Falaise. The former husband of Gloria Swanson, de la Falaise was by this time married to Constance Bennett. His two exotic Technicolor docudramas LEGONG: DANCE OF THE VIRGINS (1935, shot in Bali) and KLIOU THE TIGER (1936, shot in Vietnam) were both 'in the can' many months prior to this February 1936 date, although this definitely looks like a production still from a movie of this type.

The top one is Benny Rubin in the 1930 MGM 2-color Technicolor short PIRATES.

Looking hard at the signature the last name appears to be "Anderson". Possible match?

The whole picture won't load, but I'd guess a pair of professional dancers Ca. 1914 - there were dozens of want-to-be copies of Vernon and Irene Castle. Even Bob Hope tried.

Someone suggested the man was von Stroheim.

They were wrong.

Lou Jacobi center. I think that's Warren Berlinger on the left and Pert Kelton on the right, so this is probably Neil Simon's play COME BLOW YOUR HORN.

No. 6 going from left to right is Joel Grey (plaid sport coat), Hal March (solid suit), Lou Jacobi, and Pert Kelton. It probably is from the original Broadway production of "Come Blow You Horn." Hal March was a game show host, actor, even beauty contest emcee. It was a great cast.

No. 1 is Bernard Gorcey of Bowery Boys fame, who played the owner of Louie's Sweet Shop and was the real life father of Slip Mahoney (Leo Gorcey). The gentleman with the horn-rimmed glasses and the slick-backed hair, who signed the photo "Meredith" is Meredith Wilson author and composer of the Broadway musical "The Music Man."

Bernard Gorcey certainly had elegant handwriting...probably the result of a teacher rapping his knuckles with a ruler.

(I removed the nun, recalling Gorcey was jewish)

Willson. It's a common error.
