Hello everyone,

I just joined Nitrateville yesterday on Dennis Doros' suggestion. Unlike many of you, my experience with silent film is not long enough to include anything but DVD (well, and laserdisc), and a few screenings at festivals and the Danish Film Institute over the years. For that reason, my knowledge is obviously limited, and I will likely not post a lot, but confine myself to reading the insights of the rest of you.

In any event, thank you for having me as a member, and to Dennis for pointing me in this direction.

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum. I collect 16mm prints. I reckon some of you know me from the 16mm collecting forums.

Hi I'm Brenda and I live in Dallas, Texas, and work in accounting. I know Bruce Calvert and Jim Reid. I've whiled away many a happy hour at one of Jim's home movie nights! :)

I'm far from an expert, but I do love classic film, as well as antiques, history, volunteer work, and collecting movie memorabilia and films.

I want to wish everyone a Happy Valentine's Day!

Greetings to all.

Long ago, I did legally adopt the moniker of "Mr. X" and made good use of it.

Tho born in Canada, I had a miserable childhood in the States. Some of the best fun that I did have was watching old films on television. And, when I went to the University of Washington (Seattle), I took advantage of their film study courses, extracurricular film series, and employment as a projectionist.

As a kid, I thought that I could probably write better stories than what was being presented at the Saturday matinee for kids. After I grew up and returned to Canada, I still think that I could write and direct better films than Hollywood produces today; so, I've been writing screenplays and building up a filmmaker's kit to help produce my own films. I realize that my odds of success are very slim, (whether submitting screenplays or having short films screened at festivals); but, I've gone back to my childhood for an idea which has possibilities for a novel feature film, (which I wish to produce on a shoestring budget, even if I could afford to spend more upon it).

After working upon my film project for a few years, (missing this year's Kingston Canadian Film Festival, in Kingston, Ontario), I'd hope to complete my project in time for next year's deadline, (in November or December). An integral part of my project has been building a compiled musical score, as was done with "silent films," with public domain music, (which suits my meager budget). Thus, I've been buying and gathering old pit orchestra music with favourable results. With a program called Sibelius, I've been limited, thusfar, to producing midi files, but expect to graduate to wav files with a virtually synthesized band.

Here are a few examples of my recent efforts:

Byron Gay's "The Vamp"

Ezra Jenkinson's "Elfentanz"

Kathryn L. Widmer's "Notoriety"

I shall make these simple midi files and other music available on one of my webpages.

Hello, I'm Kelly Brown, and I just joined this great forum.

I wrote Florence Lawrence's biography a few years ago, and am currently working on a compilation of all of the players who worked at Biograph under D.W. Griffith from 1908 to 1913.

My interest in film ranges from the beginning to now, but I guess my favorites are from the 1910s, when they were still trying to figure out what they were doing.

Personally, I live in North Carolina, am married, and am officially old -- I just registered my oldest daughter for high school last week.

Reminds me of the time when my cousin called me to ask if I was coming to her boy's bar mitzvah. "He was five only..... eight years ago!"

Last time i saw them was at my father's ninetieth birthday party and my first reaction was to think she had brought a gigolo as a date.

My name is Angie and while I’m a regular poster at the TCM and Silver Screen Oasis boards, I just registered here and it looks like a great site.

I love classic era films from the beginning of the medium through the 1940s the best with some films from the 50s and 60s too. The 20s/30s are my fave decades and the people/films I like from the 50s/60s are usually ones with actors who began working in the 20s/30s. I would say the exception to that are the sci-fi films of the 50s/60s and just about anything from the Hammer films studios.

Gary Cooper, Clara Bow, Barbara Stanwyck, and Jean Arthur are my very favorites but the list of actors/directors I enjoy from that period is very long. We have a wonderful old theater in Austin built in 1915 called The Paramount and every summer they show two or three classic films daily and it’s my favorite time of year because it’s wonderful to get to see these gems on the big silver screen (also I’m a huge baseball fan so that's two great things about the summer!).

It's always great to have new people join who can share their information and opinions with us about this strange and wonderful hobby of classic films. So welcome, Kelly, Angie and Bunny.

And Kelly, that was an excellent book on Florence Lawrence!

Hello:
I love this site. We fell into silent movies a few years back when we discovered 3-sheet and 6 sheet movie posters in our barn from 1921 and 1922. We are now gathering information about our posters and slowly getting them restored.
We also collect records from the 60's thru 90's.
I am lookig forward to watching more silent movies in the coming years.
Thanks for reading.

How did I know that would be the next question? Ha Ha.

Sure, I can tell you the names of the movies.
We have 12 in total so far and perhaps more to be found.
They are all 6 sheets and 3 sheets in quite nice shape.
Movies are all from 1921-22:
Hurricane Hutch
Go get em Hutch
Don't write letters
Adventures of Tarzan
The Timber Queen(ruth Rowland)
When the Devil Drives
Miracles of the Jungle(warner Bros)

We do not have any pic aviable yet, perhaps in time. For now we are trying to gather copies of the movies and information about them.
The only movie that we have sofar is the adventures of tarzan on dvd.

Thanks for your response.

Hi, my name is Gwen and I am a silent movie addict.

I am a college student and I maintain a silent movie website in my free time... Ok, I stay up 'till 2 a.m. working on the thing when I should be studying for midterm but you must admit that it sounded good.

Anyway, I love old movies and foreign cinema of any description but silent films are my passion. I'm not an expert but I enjoy writing for my site. It combines my two loves: silent movies and writing.

I live in California, the part without the palm trees.

Looking forward to talking to everyone.

Guess I should get my introduction out of the way as quickly as possible. My name's Jake Savage and I'm a 17 year old high school senior living in suburban Ohio. It's rare to find someone who shares my cinematic preferences outside of my family, but that's why I maintain a blog here.

My favorite directors are John Ford, Yasujiro Ozu, Mikio Naruse, Hiroshi Shimizu, Frank Borzage, Sadao Yamanaka, and William A. Wellman. My interests are pretty wide, but I am particularly passionate about pre and post war Japanese cinema, classic Hollywood, and modern German cinema, specifically the work of anybody involved with the "Berliner Schule."

Hi Gang,

Just joined this site; directed here by Bruce.

You seem like a nice bunch of folks..
Looking forward to talking with you all about silent cinema.

Longtime (fairly...) silent cinephile, esp. comedies, German
Expressionist films... heck, *anything* silent, espcially from
the 1920's...

All the better, Frederica!

That should make for interesting discussions... :P

I guess since you are in LA you've seen all the
silent film sites, homes, locations, cemetaries, etc.

I would love to get out there sometime & see all that stuff;
especially the Laurel & Hardy steps from "The Music Box."
I hear they've got a plaque commemorating it now...

Of course, knowing my luck, the moment I land is when
the big quake will hit...

TCM in particular shames me several times a month by showing me wonderful films I've never heard of or seen before.

I have stopped enjoying silents with two young kids around these days, discovering that I need to listen to films instead of hoping I can sit and only watch them.

I would like to thank the Administrator for making me welcome here and for helping me learn my way around.

I live at 17 degrees South of the Equator, where finding a croc in the swiming pool is not uncommon nor treading on poisonous snakes while gardening. If it's a choice between being too hot and humid and freezing cold, I choose the former.

I collect most types of movies and trade only. I love silent film and pre-Code movies.

I will contribute and learn, and I hope to find some trading partners as well. I can provide references.

Hola friends, my name is Justin and I'm an aspiring film archivist (by aspiring I mean, I'm trying to get into grad school) from Calgary, Alberta, who recently moved to the centre of the universe: Toronto, Ontario.

Anyway over the past 2 years or so I've watched an immense amount of film with the aim of expanding my cinema knowledge and I've discovered it to be a true passion. I've also discovered that silent films and pre-codes really float my boat. I've always had an interest in early 20th century life, stoked by my dual fascination with baseball and WWI, so silent film is a perfect complement. Ooh, and I love the macabre and the scandalous, and silent Hollywood has a ton going for it.

As for who and what I love in the realm of classic cinema, well I'll watch anything with Myrna Loy, Joan Blondell, Katharine Hepburn or Mae Clarke, I adore Harold Lloyd, James Cagney, Henry Fonda, and Fredric March. Lubitsch, Lang, Cukor, Wellman and Vidor are my favorite film makers, and I've recently discovered the wonders of Mary Pickford (long-live Charles Rosher).

I also love the thrill of the hunt, I love trying to track down films that have been neglected and forgotten. I've got a billion lists of movies to watch (be it the National Film Registry, or every Myrna Loy pre-code...Jazz Cinderella anyone?), so I hope to meet some folk who might steer me in the right direction.

As for this community, well I'll admit to being a little intimidated by the breadth of knowledge displayed here. I hope to learn a lot and would love to contribute what I can to this place.

Hi, I'm Michael Pyle, and I've been a silent film and pre-code soundie film fan for well over forty years. What attracted me to this site was the fact that I saw the name Danny Burk and, Danny, I don't know if you'll remember me from back in the 80's, but I used to talk to you about film on the phone when I purchased a few VHS tapes from you when you did a little of that business. I just remember you calling a lot of silents "juicy", and I still use the term myself when talking to others about good ones! Anyway, look forward to appreciating the info garnered from this site. I have about 7,000 VHS and DVD films, mostly from the beginning of film to around 1940, with a smattering of later things, though I just don't really care about the later things much. Once in a while... My favorite performer overall is Humphrey Bogart, and I have all but two of his films, "A Devil with Women" (1930), and "Body and Soul" (1931). Would love to find the other two. My favorite silent actors are Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., William S. Hart, and Lon Chaney. Among favorite actresses are Barbara Stanwyck, Bette Davis, Mary Pickford, and Clara Kimball Young. My favorite genres are the gangster and prison films of pre-code days and just about all silent genres, from comedy to expressionism, especially German expressionistic films of the early '20's. Look forward to these things here.
