Input wanted: where else to announce NitrateVille?

PostThu Jan 10, 2008 4:02 pm

Although the focus so far has been on silents, NitrateVille is designed to accommodate talk about viewing and collecting talkies, too, and to make it easy for people to zero in on the subset of topics that most interests them.

So are there other Usenet groups that we should announce it on? I don't really have the in-depth knowledge of others like rec.arts.movies.past-films, rec.arts.movie.tech, alt.comedy.laurel-hardy, etc., to know if they've suffered similar problems with spam, loss of good posters, etc. I also don't want to announce it in a group that has a fairly low quality of posts to begin with and attract a bunch of people who will dilute the value of NitrateVille. What we want to do is find somewhere that there's a group of good people, and make them aware that we exist and that we're worth checking out. Better to attract 5 or 10 really good and interested folks than 50 not so good ones.

Suggestions? Comments?

alt.comedy.laurel-hardy has definitely had spam problems and is not nearly as busy as it once was.

You should see if some bloggers could mention this site.

Jeff Cohen (who would probably like this site) has a great blog called Vitaphone Varieties http://vitaphone.blogspot.com/. He used to post on a.m.s a lot.

Luke McKernan's (who made a couple of posts here about his upcoming Lost Film Festival) Bioscope blog is at http://bioscopic.wordpress.com.

Thomas Stathes has a blog on silent cartoons at http://cartoonsonfilm.blogspot.com/. He was a frequent a.m.s poster and he is still on some other message boards like 16mmfilmtalk.com and Golden Silents.

Thanks, Knut, for the mention.

Thanks for your comments too, Bruce, I'm going to go post something on the L&H group now.

I also put messages up on the other two groups mentioned above. I stressed "pre-1960s" to emphasize that this is an older films board, hopefully that will attract the right folks.

I want a 100th member!

A real one. Every day as I kill registrations from spammers, I lower the number of memberships from 100 or 101 back down to 98. We need a real 100th member. So if you know somebody who's into classic film, encourage them to sign up today and they may become the real 100th member. Better them than QSJFEKS or Srumtuttyl or the like...

Yes, indeed, welcome to Mabel Normand afficionado Marilyn Slater, our real 100th, non-Viagra-peddling member!

Marilyn is a great addition to this group. Hey Marilyn, have you caught up with the newest Mabel to surface, The Floor Below? Can you give us a review?

I've just posted a Nitrateville announcement at HTF (Home Theater Forum). Since it has a large membership, there's a lot of interest there in all periods of film, so I'm sure we'll see new members coming on board today.
