FOCUS

Films: Old, Classic & Unknown on Saturdays

" ... classic American films,

distinguished foreign films,

films you've missed,

films you want to see again,

and films

you may never have had the opportunity to see."

An informal group dedicated to reviving and sharing vintage and classic motion pictures with the folks in Milwaukee and the surrounding region.

Film showings are scheduled at 7:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month (usually*), but not on the 4th Saturday in December.

*On occasion, there are conflicts with events in the church which,

of course, take precedence over FOCUS operations.

Our Location:

Showings are at The Church in the City at 2648 North Hackett Avenue (a one-way street, going north), Milwaukee (the east side) which is one block east of Downer Avenue and actually intersects with Downer Avenue at East Belleview Avenue (There's a traffic light at this corner.)

We suggest entering Hackett at Belleview and proceeding north (It's a one-way street); there's parking on Hackett and around the corner on Park Place, heading east.

Admission is $3 .....Note the new starting time is at 7 p.m.

August 22nd: A Date with the Falcon

"Bright, witty, and well-acted, this charming 1942 "B" movie is a real comedy/film noir gem. The dialog is sharp and all the performances are of a high caliber. George Sanders stars as "The Falcon", and is supported by an ensemble cast that includes James Gleason, Wendy Barrie and Allen Jenkins. Very highly entertaining." - dhg

September 12th: The Fighting Kentuckian (1949)

You've heard of Laurel and Hardy?

How about Wayne and Hardy?

Yes, John Wayne and Oliver Hardy did star together in a movie, and this is it, ... a very entertaining John Wayne adventure about land grabbers kicking the legitimate owners off their own lands. It's good, old two-fisted John Wayne action - but with the added charm of Oliver Hardy as his long-suffering sidekick. Good entertainment for the whole family.

Starring John Wayne, Vera Ralston, Oliver Hardy, Marie Windsor, Philip Dorn and Mae Marsh.

Music by George Anthiel (yes, that George Anthiel!); Photographed by Lee Garmes; Written and Directed by George WaGGner.

September 26th: The Ladies Man (1947) ... with Spike Jones and His City Slickers!!!

This is a rarely-seen [That's what FOCUS is all about, isn't it?] little musical comedy starring Eddie Bracken as a poor farmer who accidentally strikes oil on his property and suddenly finds himself a prize for the ladies. Cute songs and good comedy situations enliven this unsung Paramount picture.

And, it is further adorned by the wild and insane musical frolics of Spike Jones and his cultured and sophisticated ensemble ... he tears up the screen with several scenes of non-stop mayhem.

Starring Eddie Bracken, Cass Daily, Virginia Wells, Spike Jones and His City Slickers.

Screenplay by Edmond Beloin; Directed by William D. Russell; a Paramount Picture.

October 10th: I married a Witch (1942)

... a delightful fantasy, directed by Rene Clair, about a Salem witch and her sorcerer father who come back to haunt the descendant of the Puritan who had them burned.

Delightful, with that plot? You bet.

It's the kind of odd little movie that produces quiet chuckles along the way. And, it is a true classic. [It's been remembered for years.] Critic Leslie Halliwell says, "... all concerned were at the top of their form. Hollywood moonshine, impeccably distilled."

Starring Fredric March, Veronica Lake, Cecil Kellaway, Robert Benchley and Susan Hayward.

Screenplay by Robert Pirosh and Marc Connelly; from the novel The Passionate Witch by Thorne Smith; Music by Rob Webb; Photography by Ted Tetzlaff; Directed by Rene Clair.

October 24th: The Wolf Man (1940)

Our offering this year is from the venerable Universal Studio series of monster movies.

"Dazzling cast", in the words of Leslie Halliwell, it is actually a pretty little good movie of its kind ... lots of dark, foggy atmospherics and some bright dialogue.

And, from the Moscow Art Theatre, no less, Maria Ouspenskaya.

Starring Claude Rains, Ralph Bellamy, Maria Ouspenskaya, Bela Lugosi, Evelyn Ankers, Patic Knowles, Warren William and Lon Chaney at the Wolf Man.

Screenplay by Curt Siodmak; Music by Hans Josef Salter; Photography by Joe Valentine; Directed by George WaGGner; a Universal Picture.
