Mummy-mania goes back further than that; Theophile Gautier published mummy stories in....ummm...I think it was the 1860s, but don't quote me. Excitement over the Tut discovery was part of an orientalist craze that took place in the latter part of the 19th/early 20th century. Well, that, and it was also a really fabulous find, one of the last great moments in Pillage Archaeology.
