lost Buster Crabbe serial episode sells on ebay for $202.50

PostTue Oct 13, 2009 7:11 pm

An auction just ended for Chapter 9 of TARZAN THE FEARLESS (1930) starring Buster Crabbe as Tarzan.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0340132442

This makes it the SECOND Chapter 9 to surface on eBay in two years!

The first one sold for under $65.

It happens every once in a while where two same reels from an otherwise lost film are found on eBay. Reel 5 of ALICE THROUGH A LOOKING GLASS comes to mind.

Darren, you wouldn't happen to be referring to the 1928 Pathé release of Alice Through a Looking Glass, would you? I've never come across much information about it--the IMDB is little help, the AFI catalogue has no listing, and even the online news archives are silent on this title. Anyone know the story behind this release?

Yes. There are two reel 5s out there.

There was a thread on it here a few months ago.

Turns out that the 1928 Pathe release was made the same time at the 1910s film.

Not even the whole chapter, just reel two!

IIRC, this chapter is complete on one reel.

No, it's reel two. Go back and look at the 35mm reel pictured; it's shown to have a diameter of ten inches. That makes it a thousand-foot reel. Also, the original reel band is numbered "9, #2."

It's only worth quibbling about because the amount realized was so great. As it turns out, I know the buyer. He's not a film collector at all; he's a Tarzan collector who happens to know that TARZAN THE FEARLESS is a lost serial, and that Chapter Nine is not represented in the 85-minute feature version that was released to TV years ago.

I have the other Chapter 9 and beleive it is complete on one reel. If not, then I have part 1 and he part 2.

Now I got to check it out on my rewinds or I can't sleep! lol!

I've never heard of a sound serial chapter having only 9 minutes runtime--that is how much film that is on the reel shown. Obviously just half of the chapter is there--or worse--just a clip!

The winning bidder has part two of Chapter 9.

What confused me is that for some reason reel one had this spliced to the end of it.

For those interested, I've listed this reel on eBay. It can be found by searching for "tarzan the fearless."

Its now in the hands of the Lewis Carroll Society and has been transferred to digital. :)

Look for a 2015 release of this and other Alice In Wonderland films on a DVD set. :)
