Top Secret!

PostTue Nov 24, 2009 8:03 am

Okay, definitely not a film that deserves the "classic" label that might qualify it for discussion on NitrateVille, but it gave me a lot of laughs over the weekend, and if anyone can answer my question, it will be someone on this site.

In the underwater barroom brawl near the end of the movie, is that Robert Duvall playing the bartender?

Neither the film credits, nor the oh-so-reliable IMDB, lists any actor in the role. It sure looks like him, with a toupee floating above his skull.

In the group commentary on the DVD (the Zuckers, Abrahams & producers) he's not mentioned at all, although some of the other stunt guys are. Still-framing it, I see the resemblance, but I'd have to say no. For one thing, this guy looks older than the 1984 Duvall, to me anyway. But I think the clincher is that he's not mentioned in the commentary.

Thanks, Paul. Disappointing, isn't it?

Now that you mention it, I'm disappointed. I wasn't before. Thanks. Top Secret may not be a "classic" but it makes me laugh lots, which is pretty much what I'm looking for in a comedy. I also think it may well be Val Kilmer's best work, along with Real Genius.

I had a moment like that recently, rewatching the new, much-improved-as-a-movie Star Trek. As I'm sure everyone knows, Sulu is played by John Cho, who was, of course, Harold in the Harold and Kumar films. (Stolen by Neil Patrick Harris, I have to say.) And there's a shot on the bridge where I swore it was Kal Penn, who was, of course, Kumar. It seemed a likely cameo gag and I did a search online-- and I was not the only person who thought Kumar had beamed aboard. But it's not him, you can see that in other shots. Still does look like him in that first shot, though.

In other news, Alice Cooper is not the kid who played the Beaver, grown up.

Is this like the scene in the "Shanghai Lil" number in Footlight Parade where there's an extra who looks like John Garfield?

Somebody stole the Harold and Kumar film? Is it possible?

No, he stole two Harold and Kumar films, especially the second one.

Although the explanation of Bush-era drug policy is pretty great, too.
