Anyone else collect Movie Posters or Lobby Cards?

PostSun Nov 29, 2009 9:14 pm

Hi,

I am new to this group and am curious if there are any other movie poster/lobby card collectors on here. I mostly collect pre-1950 comedy, horror, crime, and animation. My main focus is on silent comedians (Chaplin, Keaton, even the second and third tier guys), Marx Brothers, Universal Horror, but I have posters from all genres of films I love. What do u collect?

I only have a few posters, as I'm mostly a 16mm film collector and I can't see collecting a very expensive item that will just be rolled up and kept somewhere out of view. I do collect jpg's of movie posters. I mainly use these for movie night announcements and calendars for my own use.

Valentino, naturally. Most one sheets are well out of my budget these days. I'm always looking, though, and hopeful for one more.

Powell and Pressburger film posters, lobbys, inserts....fortunately I live in a flat in an old, high-ceilinged building, so have the height for a three sheet.....I've stayed away from silent posters (I have only so much spare dosh) but I love their artwork ....
I could use some digital restoration myself...

I have a few lobby cards and a few more stills, nothing super expensive. But I did get a really nice window card of the lost Rowland V. Lee/Pola Negri flick THREE SINNERS cheap on eBay a long, long time ago. As has been discussed here before, you can get some neat stuff reasonably on eBay if the seller doesn't quite know what they have. (I got a DOCKS OF NEW YORK still really cheap because it was listed as "George Bancroft image.")

I am into the pre Hollywood stuff. There is the 1898 poster and a 1907 exhibitors catalog. Not much survives from that era so I don't have much.

I simply enjoy removing the watermark logos from scans that are around. But since I also repair recordings I'm stuck rescuing some Julio De Caro recordings and, since I have them in the computer, repair the acoustic tangos (1924-1926).

I collect all paper (posters, pressbooks, lobby cards) but only for films I own in 16mm.

I have quite a few posters from the early 1980s, because I worked at a movie theater while in college. I've got a few from the 1950s. Sadly, we just moved into a new, smaller house and we don't have room to display many. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ride Lonesome, and The Tall T are the only ones we have room to display. I have a few heralds too.

I mostly collect vintage stills. Besides specializing in silent films, like Ray I especially try to find photos from the 16mm films that I have in my collection. Most of my vintage photos found some wall space at our new house.

I like stills and heralds because they are compact to store, and they usually are not very expensive, except for those of that Valentino guy and that Brooks lady...

I got a window card for the Will Rogers film They Had to See Paris (1929) the same way. I also have a window card for the Clara Bow film Three Week Ends (1929), but that was a little more pricey.
