Procedure

Is there a video or can someone download, or explain, exactly the way a motion picture is restored and preserved...I'm going to the Selznick School, and want to know some preliminaries

Good luck at Selznick. Enjoy!

There's a fairly good book on the subject, maybe not too new but it can be previewed on Google or amazon. Sadly I forget the title right now.

Also take a look a the National Film Preservation Foundation's web site - www.filmpreservation.org.
It has an excellent section on the care and preservation of film.
Google MOVING IMAGES FOR THE FUTURE. This is a 20 minute film made by Film Technology Co. about 10 years ago, showing the steps taken by a lab specializing in preservation.

If you can get a copy of the Kino version of METROPOLIS there's a nice documentary on the restoration.

First, you can start with http://www.amianet.org/resources/educat ... areers.pdf and there's other resources on the AMIA site as well as available through membership.

There are many great books that you can access through the library loan including
http://us.macmillan.com/silentcinemaanintroduction

http://www.amazon.com/Restoration-Pictu ... 799&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/Grain-Pixel-Archi ... 821&sr=1-1

I'm sure I've missed a few, but these are the ones I own. You'll learn at lot at the Selznick school. I have great respect and affection for the people there.

There's also a great documentary on the restoration of M as an extra on the DVD release. I have the European release, but I think it is also an extra on the Criterion release here.
