In Case You Ever Wanted to Sing-Along with The 3rd Man

PostWed Jun 09, 2010 7:19 pm

I parted with $4 and bought the sheet music for the song version of Anton Karas' haunting 3rd Man Theme, lyrics by Walter Lord (author of A Night to Remember?). Imagine the music and sing along:

When a zither starts to play,
You'll remember yesterday;
In its haunting strain, Vienna lives again,
Free and bright and gay.

In your mind - a sudden gleam of a half-forgotten dream,
Seems to glimmer when you hear the third man theme.

Once again there comes to mind,
Someone that you left behind.
Love that somehow didn't last,
In that happy city of the past.

Does she still recall the dream, that rapture so supreme.
When first she heard the haunting third man theme?

Carnivals and carousels and ferris wheels and parasols,
The Danube nights, the dancing lights, again will shine.
The zither's sweet refrain keeps swirling in your brain like new May wine.
Strauss waltzes, candle glow, and the laughter of long ago.

Fill the magic chords and make it seem like today.
You never knew that you could be enchanted by a melody.
The years will never drive it out;
You don't know why - It's something you can't live without.

You hear it in the twilight hush
And in the morning traffic rush
A song that's always new
In your heart, a part of you

Oh, When a zither starts to play,
You'll remember yesterday;
In its haunting strain, Vienna lives again,
Free and bright and gay.

In your mind - a sudden gleam of a half-forgotten dream,
Seems to glimmer when you hear the third man theme.

All this bright gay and happy Vienna? Um, not at that point it wasn't. Did the lyricist SEE the film? :shock:

NOT NOT NOT reading the lyrics anymore, otherwise I'll remember them and that will ruin it.

How about ,,Ich küsse Ihre Hand, Madame'' for cleansing one's mind of zither music?

This song was used as Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent's love theme in Baby Face, if I remember correctly.

For a couple of years I had Carmen Miranda stuck in my head, singing 'Paducah.'

Fortunately, I discovered that Ella Fitzgerald singing "Fascinatin' Rhythm" will clean up anything.

So will "Puffin' Billy" but that may be a personal quirk Remember, kids, you can always trust the Captain.

"Cow Cow Boogie" was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald for the Universal Picture RIDE 'EM COWBOY. But it was dropped before release (I have a Universal playback disc). Ella Mae Morse recorded the tune for Capitol in 1942. It was a BIG hit. It finally appeared on screen in the Walter Lantz Cartune COW COW BOOGIE and sheet music was issued for that picture. Morse then performed the song in Columbia's 1943 film REVEILLE WITH BEVERLY.

Cow Cow Boogie Ella Mae Morse

Cow Cow Boogie was one of those songs on record that had a different lead performer depending on what country it was released. Some had Freddie Alack & His orch highlighted and others has Ella Mae Morse.

Oh trust me, you haven't lived until you've heard Freddy Martin's version...with a vocal by Merv Griffin, no less!

Yes, the Titanic author.

The lyrics were commissioned by David O. Selznick, whose only stipulation was that the word "zither" appear in the first line.

Here are two good instrumental versions of the Third Man Theme. Sorry, no lyrics.

The first is by Sungha Jung, the Korean guitar prodigy:

The second is by Anton Karas himself, from a live performance in 1982:
