Scalping classic movie collectibles

PostTue Apr 01, 2008 8:40 pm

I've seen numerous eBay sellers who have found a nitrate film and are convinced that since it is rare it must be worth thousands of dollars. Here's a new one though, this Amazon seller thinks that an unused but out-of-print Milestone DVD of Pickford's Stella Maris (1918) is worth $600!

Too bad Dennis Doros won't see any of this, but I doubt that it would sell at this price.

If anybody has some other examples of ridiculous prices for memorabilia and films that really shouldn't be that expensive, please chime in...

Well, I do have my copy...

Actually the good news is that there's a person now at Image willing to replicate the three or four Milestone titles out of print. Hopefully this will happen.

Is there any chance that "The Silent Enemy" will be one of these? It's also on Amazon for a prohibitive price, though I don't see it at the Milestone website.

Actually, that's one that we lost the rights to. Perhaps one day it'll come back in print.

This crazy seller thinks that a single issue of The Moving Picture World is worth $600 due to advertisements for Tarzan Almighty and The Singing Fool. Their ad even states, "I NO DOUBT COULD GET MORE FOR THESE TWO ADS IF I SPLIT THEM UP BUT THEN THIS MAGAZINE WOULD BECOME INCOMPLETE."

Actually they usually sell for $25-$75 depending on condition and contents.

Besides STELLA MARIS and THE SILENT ENEMY, which other Milestone DVDs are out-of-print?

I really want the former, but if there's a chance of it being reissued, I'd rather not pay $75 for a used copy.

There's a poster for an early "Trip to the Moon"-type film that has been on eBay for over a year. IIRC, it began at $1 million, then slowly dropped in price to $750K, then $500k... It still pops up every now and then, but the seller still thinks it's worth more than waterfront property on the Pacific!

I always get a chuckle from non-film people who find an old 8mm Blackhawk print of POTO in their grandmother's attic, and think it's "incredibly rare. There aren't many copies of this film in existence."

On the other hand, OOP videos can fetch quite a bit of money on eBay, especially if the film hasn't been released on DVD. Last year, I paid through the NOSE for a 20 year old ex-rental video of THE TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR. SADISM. Now I learn it's coming out on DVD this summer. :x

Now that STELLA MARIS is back in print, is there any update on the chances of THE SILENT ENEMY coming back as well?

As far as film goes, it may seem like a stupid outrageous price for some nitrate film, but the fact remains that people do spend stupid money on these prints.
