John Barrymore Silent Film Themes

PostMon Jan 03, 2011 7:21 pm

Is anybody aware of sheet music themes for any of John Barrymore's silents other than DON JUAN and TEMPEST? A number of his talkies have music tie-ins such as DINNER AT EIGHT, MAYTIME, and TRUE CONFESSION.

The William Axt theme heard in this film makes a nice piano piece:

I don't believe this theme for TEMPEST was used in the film although I'd have to check the dvd to be sure:

Any info is appreciated!

These aren't ads. They're sheet music covers.

If you play the piano I can send you the DJ sheet music. It is the lovely main theme heard in the film. The NYT reviewer for THE SEA BEAST mentioned that the old favorite, "Just A Song At Twilight," was used as the love theme in that film. Recently, somebody on N'ville said he had a copy of the piano reduction score for TSB - boy, am I jealous!

Here's a couple of ads (posters), not sheet music:

I'm reviving this thread because I found another John Barrymore silent film sheet music. This one is from JB's last silent, ETERNAL LOVE (1929), directed by Ernst Lubitsch.

While I'm on the subject, this next sheet music was actually sung by Mr. Barrymore on the stage in THE JEST (1919). The story sounds interesting so I wish it had been filmed by the Great Profile. But we can hear him sing this song when he performed a playlet of THE JEST on a radio broadcast, Texaco Star Theater on Oct. 12, 1938. The supporting cast is interesting - Noah Berry played Lionel's role, and Elaine Barry, Jack's troublesome wife at the time. The segment was directed by Max Reinhardt, of all people.

mentioned that the old favorite, "Just A Song At Twilight," was used as the love theme in that film.

Is that the title by which "Love's Old Sweet Song" is known in the United States?

This melody is often used in silent film accompaniment - especially one I watched recently "Flesh & Blood" with Lon Chaney. (It is written on the inter-titles, so the accompanist obliged by playing it}. I think that it is probably as hackneyed as "Hearts and Flowers" and "Maiden's Prayer" myself.

Mr. Binks, I don't know if the titles represent the same song. To further confuse matters, here's the theme song from Douglas Fairbanks' ROBIN HOOD (1922):

Thank you Mr. Fells. I have since found out that the two songs I quoted are one in the same. (composed by Molloy 1884)

Victor Schertzinger was a little later - he wrote "Marcheta" (1913) and "Dream Lover" (1929) just to name a couple of his hits. As well as being a popular song composer he also composed accompaniments to films, was a violinist, conductor, film director, film producer and screen-writer. Quite a jack of all trades.

Presumably the Sid Grauman who wrote the lyrics to the Robin Hood theme is that Sid Grauman?

Anyone know if this was a one-off?

Wonderful--song, singer, & gown.

But even more so--the sweetest sound of them all :

I think everyone had a go at putting out a recording of "Love's Old Song" - including Count John McCormack and Richard Tauber to name just two off the top of my head. How lovely to hear Galli-Curci's version. Makes such a change from this age of squawking., electric guitars, persistent drumbeats and overloud loudspeakers.
