The Silent Composer - Charlie Chaplin and His Music

PostSun Feb 20, 2011 2:45 am

Just caught the very interesting radio documentary `The Silent Composer - Charlie Chaplin and His Music', on Australia's Radio National. It's particularly insightful on the nuts and bolts of how Chaplin worked with his arrangers, and what he actually wanted out of his film scores. Carl Davis and David Robinson are amongst those interviewed.

The audio is at http://www.abc.net.au/rn/intothemusic/s ... 111369.htm, though I'm not sure how accessible it will be outside Australia. A link to a transcript is also included but, as of writing, it doesn't seem to have been uploaded yet.

There seems to be a slew of new Chaplin stuff at the moment (for example http://www.nitrateville.com/viewtopic.php?t=8324). What's the occasion?

Thanks Brooksie for alerting me to this – certainly a fascinating exploration of Charlie Chaplin and his music, especially when his musical insights and compositional skills seem for the most part unknown. The rare archival recordings of Chaplin from the Association Chaplin in Paris were a highlight for me.

The program was not be broadcast where I live, and is not available as an mp3 download because of music copyright issues, so I had to temporarily record it overnight last night via internet streaming audio to be able to listen to it today. Access is world-wide.

It's a pity that seemingly insurmountable copyright problems as far as Chaplin goes are still alive and well in 2011 – even with radio documentaries :(

Is it fact or fiction that Chaplin composed the score for my favorite of all his works, A Woman of Paris?

A quick read with some insight is "Making Music with Charlie Chaplin" by Eric James. (Scarecrow Press, 2000)
