Joan Crawford Estate Sale

PostMon Nov 21, 2011 5:14 pm

The latest estate on the auction block will be Joan Crawford's - I just received the following press release (see also http://www.doylenewyork.com/content/more.asp?id=177).

There is a small selection of lots at the above link. Some of the price estimates seem ridiculously low. $150-$250 for Joan's personal scrapbook on 'Mildred Pierce'?

DOYLE NEW YORK TO AUCTION PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF JOAN CRAWFORD ON DECEMBER 7, 2011

Doyle New York is honored to auction property from the Estate of Legendary Star of Hollywood's Golden Age Joan Crawford on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 10am. This historic sale features 77 lots of MGM Studios contracts and correspondence, film memorabilia, publicity stills, jewelry and a selection of luxurious fur coats and wraps. The property has descended in Ms. Crawford's family and is now being offered at auction to her fans worldwide. The public is invited to the exhibition on view Saturday, December 3 though Tuesday, December 8. Doyle New York is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

One of the sale's highlights is the Cecile B. DeMille Award presented to Joan Crawford by the Foreign Press Association at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony in 1970. Fans may also bid on Ms. Crawford's scrapbooks chronicling a number of her films of the 1930s and 40s, as well as studio contracts and the 1943 letter detailing the buy out of her contract with MGM. Jewelry from Ms. Crawford's collection features a gold, diamond, emerald and ruby brooch in the form of a miniature Pepsi bottle. Her collection of furs offers coats, stoles and boas in mink, sable and fox.

She got $100K to cancel her contract with MGM? in 1943? Dawg. Not so dumb, our Joan.

When was her last contract renewal? 40? 41? And how much time was left on her contract when the ties were severed? She was riding high after The Women, Strange Cargo and A Woman's Face and I'm sure after Garbo and Shearer retired, she thought she would be queen of the lot, but it didn't happen. Having lived through Gilbert, Billy Haines, Keaton and the rest, she knew that MGM would keep her working through her contract ... and not to the betterment of her career if they were tired of her.

Whether she jumped or was pushed, it was a good thing she left when she did. 100k was a nice parachute too.

Nope, not chump change at all. I'm sure was quite a savvy businesswoman, probably served her well all the years she was on the Board of PepsiCo, too.

Brooksie, thanks for posting the link to the auction, some good stuff in there. I agree 100%, the estimates are very low.
