Silent Anne of Green Gables Film Recreated

PostSun Jan 22, 2012 10:26 am

Incidentally, today is the first time ever the CBC webpage for arts and entertainment has been dominated by silent film news. Of the two lead articles posed on their home page, this Green Gables link is #1, and the #2 link is the showing of a silent Far North film in Edmonton, which can be found here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/story/2012/ ... anada.html

"That is not the Green Gables that we know and love from Prince Edward Island."

Surely they realize the story is fiction? (Or that the so-called "Green Gables" house in P.E.I. was built to satisfy the tourist trade.)

Also odd to see someone who runs a museum handle a piece of sheet music that he supposedly paid $1,000 for on eBay like it's yesterday's Shoppers Drug Mart flyer.

As an out-and-proud Anne fan, I can't allow this to go unchallenged. The building belonged to (author) L.M. Montgomery's family, and while it might have been done up for the tourist trade, it definitely wasn't built for it.

Parks Canada's website wrote:In real life, this farm was the home of David Jr. and Margaret Macneill, who were cousins of Montgomery's grandfather.

Ah, it's amazing what a little Googling can do. Correction duly noted! Thank you, Brooksie!

:? Just got around to watching the video piece on the story, and I must say that the old guy the piano player sure didn't seem to know much about Silent films. Disappointing. Course maybe it was just edited that way.

Wonder if they knew about this Lobby-card?

I kept wondering how he could read sheet music through those eyebrows.

But to be fair, they're clearly not silent film experts, just Anne of Green Gables experts (unlike me, as noted above), who'd probably never heard of Mary Miles Minter before stumbling across that piece of sheet music, although you'd think they would have known about the film's existence from looking at the IMDb or something (but then again, given my mom's dislike of the Internet, maybe that shouldn't be surprising). This looks more like a fun pet project for their museum rather than an academic job of film restoration/recreation, and I hope they continue to look for more stills and other ephemera related to the MMM film. Who knows, maybe they'll stumble upon a print in the attic of some long-dead projectionist or Green Gable-o-phile.

Also, looking at that lobby card, I guess whoever coloured it forgot to note that Anne is supposed to be a redhead. Or did they omit that part of the story from the MMM version since she was famous for her golden locks?
