At the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards tonight, THE ARTIST picked up the following awards:

Best Film

Hopefully this bodes well for the Oscars two weeks from now!

Thanks,

A new black-and-white silent film made in the actual style of old black-and-white silent films by extremely talented filmmakers who love them continues to sweep up prestigious awards right and left. As a silent film fanatic, I can't express how ecstatic I am about that, especially as it just so happens to be an excellent film that deserves every last damn one of them in my not-remotely-humble opinion. Next stop: THE OSCARS!

Isn't this just absolutely wonderful!

It's as if the last 85 years hasn't existed - perhaps Al Jolson should re-appear in ghost form to tell us "You ain't gonna hear nuttin' no more!"

What all these awards do tell us though is that most modern day pictures are rubbish catering for those with the brain size of a chimpanzee. Hopefully it should encourage a return to quality - and if that means silent pictures - I'm all for it.
Silents Please!

Yeah, too bad this movie sucked because they used the music from "Vertigo" and the underwear wasn't "period" correct

In the introduction to Seventh Heaven last year, Denise Morrison pointed out that at the first Academy Awards, they weren't that important. They didn't have a track record, and seemed more like an employee of the month award. When Janet Gaynor was told she would be given an award at this dinner, she thought "Okay, guess I'll go." It was when she heard it would be presented by Douglas Fairbanks that she got excited!

A lot of people go to see a movie which is nominated or wins who wouldn't go otherwise. The take from the Best Winner award can be about ten million dollars at the box office -- not overwhelming when you're talking about TITANIC, but given that, judging by the IMDB BO numbers, THE ARTIST just made its nut of twice its estimated production cost of $15,000,000 last week, very important.

Heck, Albert Nobbs only played here because of the nominations and I spent two of my most miserable hours in a theater watching it.

Yes, I suppose they hold some clout from an industry standpoint.
However, BEST PICTURE doesn't really mean best picture, and so on.....

They're important in this case, to heighten the awareness of silent film technique, and how it is possible to still make a film using this technique that will be watched and loved by enough filmgoers to make it profitable. This is quite the unprecedented occurrence; surely you can see that.

By the by, THE ARTIST has made well over three times its production budget when you add up the total worldwide box office take.

If the buzz over an Oscar for The Artist raises the awareness of large numbers of movie fans that silent films are not the musty relics they thought they were, the value of an Oscar win, for silent fans, will be enormous.

Absolutely, and I would think all Nitratevillains would realize that, at least once they've had their morning coffee. :-)

Oh please, there are plenty of great movies coming out every year - and I don't mean blockbuster type films either.

I can only say that I was sat behind Kevin at the screening in Bologna last Summer and he seemed to both enjoy it and respected it highly. He was certainly smiling......

How about thanking David Shepard, Kevin Brownlow, William
K. Everson, Bob Birchard, John Hampton, Lawrence Stallings,
Mike Gerbert, Eric Grayson, Greta De Groat, Bruce Calvert
.....among many too numerous to mention who have been
performing, all along, the thankless task of upholding silent
movies, despite great odds, so that audiences of today could
see what a real one looks like after viewing a fake one.

Also: Rodney Sauer, nitrateville.com, L(OC) (Original
Cloud), Kino, BlackHawk Films, The Bioscope, (ahem) Raymond
Rohauer, Museum of Modern Art, Robert Youngson, James Agee......

This is the 2nd silent film star Dujardin has mentioned in his thank you's (that I know of anyway). The first was Douglas Fairbanks. Give the man a break!

The Artist have chances to win as best actor, if there is not a competitor who had to gain a lot of weight for fit the character.

Oar love things like that, when actor have to gain much weight, or a character who have a physical or mental or deficience.
Keep thinking...

And now from the man himself, reported in USA Today; http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/movieawards/oscars/story/2012-02-17/silent-films-silent-performances-receive-oscar-attention/53123208/1

"For Kevin Brownlow, the world's foremost silent-film expert and the only movie historian to be granted an Oscar, the four public performances of Napoleon represent the culmination of a half-century-plus restoration project.

He, too, is enamored of The Artist's achievements. "It was expressive enough so that I could sit back and enjoy it in exactly the same way as a Colleen Moore picture or a similar film of the silent era. It has the spirit of the originals. I am very envious of the director. I would have loved to have made that."

Penfold,

:D Yeah! Kevin mentions Colleen Moore! Though the writer fails to note who she was. :? Nevertheless, just her name being brought up in the conversation is significant. :) Thanks for the link.

I'm sure the interviewer didn't know Colleen Moore from Julianne Moore.

She's been in some really good films; a talented character actress, she is. I'm surprised you haven't heard of her.
