Archival screening in Santa Barbara

PostSun Feb 26, 2012 8:37 am

I'm thinking of bringing in some 35mm archival prints this summer to play in our new (very posh) theater with live accompaniment. The films won't be the old standards you've seen over and over again but films made here in Santa Barbara 100 years ago and made by directors like Allan Dwan, Gilbert Anderson, Reeves Eason, Henry King and Frank Borzage.

So here's the question for my California friends... Would you rather make the trek to Santa Barbara for a late afternoon screening on a Saturday or a Sunday?

BTW, it will take place on July 7th or July 8th to tie in with the Flying A's centennial.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

That sounds fun. I think Sunday would be better for people from LA, so we don't feel we have to rush back for work the next day.

Wouldn't that make Saturday better? A Sunday afternoon puts LA (and San Diego and San Francisco) folk bucking traffic on a Sunday evening(?)

Dana - where is your new & posh screening room - SB Historical Museum? My sister lives in the area and I visit now and then.

We're going for Saturday July 7th. The Pollock Theater is at UC Santa Barbara - 300 seats, beautiful acoustics and dual kinotons for archival projection. Michael Mortilla will likely helm the piano.

Dana,

Please keep this thread updated as I am a big Flying A fan and would love to attend this event, especially if it is on a Saturday!

What building? Is this a new place or a renamed theater?

It's called the Pollock Theater and named after the donor family. UCSB opened it last year, a brand new building. This will be its first silent film screening but certainly not the last.

I'll come up for it--is it in SB or in Goleta?

Ah, trick question. Back when UCSB moved out to the Goleta valley the city of Santa Barbara wanted it to be ucSB (and a small detail, the airport is adjacent to the campus.) So they annexed a ten mile long pathway on the beachfront to physically tie the campus and airport to the city - international academic acclaim and airport taxes to boot. So yes, it's in Santa Barbara but you still have to drive another ten miles.

I can confirm that, Dana. Yes, I will be accompanying the screening. See you there!

Will you please update us when tickets go on sale? I checked the Pollock Theater website, they don't have the event listed yet, unless I missed it. I'm sure we can get a rowdy bunch of Angelenos together for a trip to Santa Barbara for the event.

I'll come up as well, and can probably round up other cinegoons to come, as long as it doesn't confilict with Niles Festival.

No conflict with Niles dates. The Flying A may have poached a lot of the talent from Essanay but I'd never set a date that would conflict with the good people up north! We'll even be showing a 1910 Essanay that was made in SB. The rest of the program is strictly Flying A - stuff few people have seen - like a situation comedy directed by Reeves Eason(!?)

Thanks Michael for posting the link. Looks like we'll be serving some local Santa Ynez valley wines (think "Sideways") at the after-screening. Don't know where the cheese will come from but it's all included in the ticket price!
