The Deep Blue Sea (Anatole Litvak, 1955)

PostTue Apr 03, 2012 3:01 pm

Thought I'd throw this one out there. Does anyone happen to know who might have the rights to this 1955 version of Terrence Rattigan's play starring Vivien Leigh? It was produced by London Films and distributed by 20th Century Fox.

Someone at Music Box Films, the new film's distributor, is actually trying to find out because they're thinking of including a trailer of the 1955 original on the eventual Blu-Ray/DVD release. I'm pretty sure the producers don't own the rights to the 1955 version, unless NO one owns it, and thus they can claim it since they have the underlying rights to the play.

I would imagine the Terrence Rattigan estate now owns the rights; famous authors (particularly playwrights) often had it in their film contracts during the 40s and 50s that ownership would revert to them after a certain number of years. This is why a number of major films from this era aren't seen that often anymore; the estates who now own the film likely don't have the ways to market it today and possibly don't even own an actual print of the movie.
