Can anyone tell me about my Stan lamp?? (with photo)

PostFri Apr 20, 2012 5:50 pm

In the 1970s, when I was a kid, a couple of the now long-gone department stores had Stan and Ollie, Marx Bros, WC Fields, and more, caricatures statues. All tall with big heads and small bodies.

About 15 years ago I happened upon a Stanly. However, it comes as a lamp with a burlap shade. I've never seen one before or since. It seems to be made of plaster.

This is of high quality, HEAVY and is nothing like the knock offs that used to infest flea markets in the 1980s.

Can anyone tell me something about it? :D

Who made these? What's the story?

Here it is on my night-stan-d.

Is it possible someone made a lamp out of a statue? There isn't enough detail here to see if the holes needed were cast or drilled. Making novelty lamps out of disused items was one of those things people did so often years ago that it turned into a sitcom joke. A burlap lampshade would seem a homegrown product (that or faux rustic), and somewhat '70s as well.

I think you actually have a Dick Van Dyke lamp.

Yes, Dick Van Dyck as he would appear if he was playing the role of a child molester.

Burlap lamp shades were a very popular 1970's item- you could find them in a variety of colors. My mother had a pair of "danish modern" walnut and brass lamps with natural burlap shades trimmed with gold braid. She later spray painted them white.

Dammit, now the statue/lamp creeps me out even more.

Actually, I was thinking more of Van Dyke's role in THE COMIC.

No maker's markings. The lamp rod is molded into the statue. Not drilled into. Its a bonafied lamp.
