LONESOME coming from Criterion to DVD and Blu-ray?

PostThu Mar 17, 2011 9:57 pm

Quote with link from Jonas EB on the TCM forums tonight:

http://criterionforum.org/forum/viewtop ... 01#p330801

"Criterion will be releasing Paul Fejos' Lonesome in the next couple of years! Along with People on Sunday, the Naruse silent set, and the Sternberg box, this indicates a new age in Criterion's reputation with silent films."

Hmm, I'm wondering if this couldn't actually be coming from Flicker Alley rather than Criterion. The author of the post may have got this mixed up? I say this because Flicker Alley usually has a release in the Spring, and another in in the Summer. LAILA is coming in a few weeks. At this point there has been no announcement about anything for the Summer.

Criterion is the one releasing it, as far as I know.

Well, in either case, doesn't the film still require licensing from Universal?

Yes, which is what Criterion has been doing lately—they've struck up a fairly rare deal with Universal to distribute some of their films.

I've heard so many good things about it that I don't mind who's releasing it - I just want to see it! :)

I've seen this reported here and on a TCM forum but, as far as I can tell, there is nothing officialy announced. Will believe it when I see it.

LONESOME has been mentioned on the Criterion forums, along with THE WEDDING MARCH. I'm not sure that I am even registered there. But I will check. See if anything new has been said.

Still nothing official (August announcement due next Tuesday). From the link: "What to look forward to: A Hollis Frampton Odyssey, Harold and Maude, Being John Malkovich, Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, the Spalding Gray films (Gray’s Anatomy and And Everything is Going Fine), and Lonesome, a nearly silent film from 1928."

All of the other titles listed have been released or have announced release dates. Hoping Lonesome not the lone exception!

:o I hope that it's released. SHAKEDOWN would be a nice extra. No news on THE WEDDING MARCH? They have had the rights to that allot longer than they have had for LONESOME.

Nearly silent isn't good enough. Lonesome needs to be all silent.

It's not going to be a single DVD of just LONESOME, but a set of three by director Paul Fejos:
LONESOME
BROADWAY
THE LAST PERFORMANCE

I assume that you mean you don't care for the three talking sequences (and if so, I agree!)
But the original 1928 music & effects score is essential (in my opinion).

Richard, hope you're right about the set of 3. Prediction or inside information? Any idea when? BTW, I've never heard the original score but love the score by Alloy Orchestra. Hopefully will be the all silent version with both scores. :D

From what I hear, Lonesome will NOT contain the Alloy score. Guessing the original, which I've never heard but Richard seems to like it. :)

The music and effects score is a very nice one. The three talking sequences are major interruptions, but the first two aren't bad in themselves- it's nice to hear Tryon and Kent and they come off well. The third is a major annoyance- the boy is frantic in his efforts to find the girl, and the talking sequence just delays things with stale jokes.

Awesome! I've been wanting to see LONESOME for some time, but it's THE LAST PERFORMANCE I'd purchase this for - Veidt is mesmerizing in this.

I hope this is a trend with Criterion. They gave us three Von Sternberg silents, now three Fejos silent/part talkies. Makes you wonder what other three packs they have in store.

Well, if you look at the Eclipse line, that's all it is-- three and four packs.

I assume von Sternberg didn't go in that line because the licensing costs were higher than Eclipse (which is somewhat budgety) allows.

I believe the Vigo set was also Criterion, not Eclipse, but I don't think it was licensing costs more than it was they simply wanted to give his films extra treatment with additional features--commentaries, booklet...the whole nine.

I'll be curious to see what they use for artwork. I don't think I've seen the original poster art for these films, but some of the sheet music is quite nice.

Is the song "Always" used in the original music and effects score?

Yes, it is. It is played a few times, and in a scene at the end, they even show the 78 Brunswick record label indicating that the vocal version we are about to hear is that of Nick Lucas. But then we hear a different version, not by Lucas.

Also in the music score are other popular tunes that audiences of the day probably would have recognized, including:
Four Walls (Jolson, Rose, Dryer)
Oh How I Hate To Get Up in the Morning (Irving Berlin)
Goodbye Broadway, Hello Montreal (Rose, Dixon, Warren)
My Pet (Yellen & Ager)
We Love It (Rose, Dixon, Warren)
There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight (F. Beyer)
In My Bouquet of Memories (Lewis, Young, Akst)
Yes Sir, That's My Baby (Donaldson)
Somebody Sweet is Sweet on Me (Kahn & Donovan)

Hopefully will be announced as an August release this Tuesday. Too bad they couldn't have it ready by July...would have been a perfect movie to watch on the Fourth!
