Silent trailers

PostWed May 16, 2012 11:07 am

So, today I was watching my Milestone DVD of The Phantom of the Opera, and after looking at the trailer for the original 1925 release, I got to wondering how many trailers from the silent era actually survive. This is the only one I've ever seen.

The More Treasures From the Archive DVD set has several trailers on it. I have a couple of 16m trailer reels. One is a Blackhawk compilation of silent serial trailers, and the other is a Thunderbird reel of 1928-1929 trailers that contain only artwork and no scenes from the films. The old Lost World DVD has a trailer for that film too, and the Fragments compilation that plays on TCM has some trailers for films that are otherwise lost.

The following is a trailer for the lost film, Lubitsch's The Patriot (1928). It's important because there is only one reel surviving from the original film.

I have several silent trailers on 16mm. The Rookies with Dane & Arthur, Irene with Colleen Moore and I do have the Phantom of the Opera trailer.

There are many silent trailers that survive, with many being the only surviving footage of the features. Included in this number are at least a couple found in the New Zealand film archive a few years ago.

I got one for THE KNOCKOUT (1925) but it's incredibly short.

My 16mm serial trailers are Hurricane Hutch (1921), The Flame Fighter (1925), King of the Jungle (1927), and The Mystery Rider (1928).

The artwork-only trailers that I have are from : The Desert Song, Why Leave Home?, The Big City, Broadway Babies, Glad Rag Doll, The Trail of ’98, Student Prince of Old Heidelberg, Rio Rita, Sophomore, Mexicali Rose, Queen of the Nightclubs, Rainbow Man, Garden of Allah, Romance of Rio Grande, Wings and Lilac Time. Most of these are early sound films.
