Lawrence of Arabia in 3D - Now playing worldwide, sort of...

PostThu Jun 14, 2012 10:35 am

There's a scene in the film Prometheus that's now playing where one of the characters is watching Lawrence of Arabia, and since Prometheus is in 3D, they did a conversion on Lawrence (a friend's company did it). It's pretty interesting, though only there for about 30 seconds (the "The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts" scene). I have to admit, sacrilege that it may be, I'd be interested in seeing the whole film in 3D as I think it lends itself very well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Lawrence of Arabia is slated to be released later this year on Blu-Ray.

Yes, that's the word on the street. Can't wait, though my screen is only about 8 feet wide. I have it already on VHS (letter box and pan & scan), laserdisc and two versions on DVD. But I don't watch them, because it needs to be seen on the big screen. Until a couple of years ago I lived in L.A., where there was at least one showing every year, but now I'm on my own, so I've got to make do with what I've got at home.

Don't need the blu-ray. Saw it years ago at the Century City Theater in LA after the last big restoration. Huge 70mm screen. Perfect projection. Will never see it that good again.

But...3D Lawrence...on a huge screen. That does sound intriguing.

It would be very interesting to compare real-world 70mm side-by-side with the new restoration at 4K. The new digital version, a labor of love straight off the negative, might easily prove to be the best the film ever has looked, or ever will. I saw LoA in 70mm about six months ago, partly to have it fresh in mind when the Blu comes out. I'm optimistic the Blu Ray will be a real joy to behold.

The only time I saw Lawrence on a big screen, it was a reissue print that looked like it had been dragged through the mud, caught in a catfight, and attacked with a staple gun.

I still loved every minute of it though.
