| From what I hear, I think it might be AT&T that is blocking recording. I have U-Verse and was unable to copy something from my DVR to the DVD recorder. |

My urgency about this is greatly lessened by the fact that I've watched two Panasonic DVD recorders die inexplicable early deaths. I'm coming to the conclusion that just buying the damn discs from Warner Archive is probably cost-effective compared to spending $300 a year on a new recorder.
I'm sure things will occasionally come along that I'll wish I could keep, but then, that's how I wound up with a couple of thousand Beta and VHS tapes full of stuff I never watched, too. |
Interesting anecdote, but hardly the norm. I have four Panasonic DVD recorders, all at least five years old, all of which get heavy usage and all of which work as well as they did when they were new. I have many friends whose experience with Panny DVD recorders that mirror mine. |

My Panasonic DVD recorder died recently at age 5. Won't even power up now. There have been many others who have had problems with these as well. |

Well, I experimented with TCM today just to see if the "ban" has been lifted. I don't seem to have any trouble recording on DVD now, but we'll give it time.
For the record, I did send a testy letter to AT&T headquarters about a week ago. Doubt if that's the reason I can record on DVD again, but who knows?
I'll keep posted if they go back to write-protect again. |

I have a friend who owns a service shop that is a Panasonic authorized repair facility. He tells me that Panny DVD recorders have proven to be extremely reliable...much more so than many of the other brands he sees in his shop. And much more reliable than DVRs, which he says tend to be very unreliable with lots of HD failures.
BTW, if your unit won't even power up, the odds are good you have a blown fuse. It is possible it is a fried power supply, but since they are there to protect the power supply, I would check the fuses first (there is one on the outside of the case and one or two on the inside). |

I bought a first-generation Panasonic DVD-R recorder for my cable station lo these many years ago. None of the young welps I work with want to use it so I keep it in my office where it still is chugging away quite nicely. _________________ Rob Farr

It powers up, and then makes a noise like it's grinding coffee until you kill the power.
If they're so reliable, why are you on a first-name basis with an authorized Panasonic serviceman? _________________ "Why, everybody at NitrateVille is pixillated— except us." |

Because his day job is repairing Maytag machines.

I know you are being facetious, but I knew him long before he became a electronic guru...and before there were such things as DVD recorders. |

That's my wish, too....currently in my area to get TCM, you either have to have satelite or cable--but the packages that include TCM bring the monthly total to around $63--a lot of money for just one channel I would use.
Hopefully someday these special channels will do live streaming or HD downloads. |

Over two weeks now, and TCM is still okay. I just copied the ROAD pictures onto DVD. Maybe the squeaky wheel does get paid attention to.
I hope it lasts. |
