Re: DOUBLE DOOR (1934)

I've seldom seen a hardcore film buff audience react so viscerally to a vintage film, even shouting at the screen both times I've seen it. Even more amazing, a couple of years ago Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills staged the play, and the same thing happened! Kudos to the actors for not letting it distra...

Budd hated the name "Oscar." I assume he picked Budd as a nickname because it was alliterative. He added the extra "d" because everyone else was simply "Bud."

BTW, a big hat-tip to Mary Mallory, who suggested THE TRAIL OF VINCE BARNETT. There's apparently a whole bunch of those Roach Refugee shorts still in the vaults at Universal, and hopefully we can get them to preserve more. Ooooh. More with Max? More CROOKS' TOUR insanity? Thanks for the wrap-up! I'd quibble with a couple of your opinions, but hey, that's what makes a horse race. Well, that and horses. And betting. Anyway, a couple of corrections: SOLOMON: Page played the singer, Henry the socialite. This is the last time I write a program note from memory. ASEGURE w...

And Universal's intended heir apparent to Deanna Durbin. Cinecon showed one of her pictures a few years back (I suspect Jean herself was intended to appear but had to pull out). She was just a little too polished, too pretty and too showbusiness to truly follow in Deanna's footsteps. She did indeed...

Has everybody weighed in that's coming, or are more interested? I was thinking either Saturday or Sunday meal break. If we're large enough, we can get the Pig N Whistle private room again. I need to know soon though. I'd recommend Saturday, as it will have a longer dinner break than Sunday. Mike S.

I can spend a week in Europe for the cost of a week in California. Or consider a more apropos alternate use of a big chunk of money: to cover expenses of running the film festival or to restore films. Lots of people who attend Cinecon stay in lodging. The aggregate amount of money that these people...

"There are other theaters and hotels in the Los Angeles area." Yes, but there are very few theatres that can project 35mm prints, especially archival ones on reel-to-reel (and none can run nitrate). We considered the other Cinematheque theatre, the Aero, in Santa Monica, but there isn't a hotel any...

More Universal Silents!

Hi, Everyone, As most of you know, Universal has committed to preserving/restoring ten more silent features. No titles have been selected yet, but a friend of mine there said that if I wanted to solicit suggestions from "the experts" (Hey, he means us!), he'd be glad to pass them along. So okay, fo...

They're confusing the DVD with the streaming feature version, which does have only four. I've already talked to them about this.

I suspect that the 35 I made was junked. When I was fired by Paramount in 1993, they stupidly trashed a lot of the prints I made (including a tinted print of TESS OF THE STORM COUNTRY) just to be spiteful, not considering that those were corporate assets that could have continued to generate income...

I watched MANHANDLED last night, and was surprised (before viewing) to read the liner notes, which said that no 35mm exists; this version is made from material held by Lobster and by Indiana University. The 1933 Universal Walter Winchell short, I KNOW EVERYBODY AND EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS, was mainly shot live at the Hotel Biltmore. We have some production stills from the shoot.
