Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Well, I needed something cheerier than watching a Romanian die (or a Japanese—I've seen Imamura's remake of The Ballad of Narayama) and so when I saw Hope and Glory (1987) pop up on Amazon Prime I gathered the family around the wireless. To say it's John Boorman's most likable film is not saying muc...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Lazarescu Dante Remus is the name he has to repeat over and over; Lazarescu for Lazarus, no doubt, which he is not, Dante for his journey to hell which is about to begin, Remus I presume for the co-founder of Rome, and thus of Romania, which is where The Death of Mr Lazarescu (2005) comes from, full...

It's on Filmstruck as Stakeout.

Filmstruck has a vast quantity of Japanese films which have never seen any kind of Criterion/Eclipse release.

Re: STAN AND OLLIE trailer

You only see the Langdon figure for an instant, but it's someone who kind of looks like him, so... he'll probably have a name. The drama is probably stepped up, but it looks like a sweet film and well-performed, though Reilly doesn't quite get a convincing Hardy voice. The makeup is pretty amazing t...

Re: 'Lilac Time' TCM Wed Oct 24th 6am EST

If I may chime in, I'll just say I hope this film is rescued and shown at least once before I die. For others, time is much shorter. Colleen Moore's legacy deserves better. It's shown around fairly frequently for a silent. I've probably had at least three chances to see it in a theater (two of whic...

Re: 'Lilac Time' TCM Wed Oct 24th 6am EST

You can kvetch and kvell all you want, but life is just different inside a big corporation like that. You might as well ask why the Pentagon can't buy a wrench for $11 like you can. They would not have someone like Phil Carli play for a film without knowing that they can clear all the music he plays...

Criterion for December

Only four titles but I'm excited that at long last Duvivier's Panique , which their sibling Rialto released on the arthouse circle more than a year ago, will be out. Also Fuller's Forty Guns , Bergman's Sawdust and Tinsel (presumably in the big Bergman set coming in November), and an 80s indie calle...

Re: 'Lilac Time' TCM Wed Oct 24th 6am EST

Does it cost more for TCM to acquire new, ready-for-showing, silents via this (outsider-provider) route than to simply dig into their own collection (of still un-televised silents that they already own), do a no-frills video transfer, and hire a capable, silent accompanist to improvise a score? It ...

We now have separate "New posts" and "Unread posts" buttons on the top-level navigation. I think that's it for upgrades unless there's anything else anyone has observed that needs fixings. Hopefully this will be good for half a dozen years like the last one. Thanks to all who contributed to the fixe...

Well, as Ed Lorusso points out on the new podcast, they'll license public domain stuff that's professionally produced with scores-- sometimes. So get on that!

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2018)

Easy Living (1937) is written by Preston Sturges and directed with both gorgeous 30s gloss and high energy by Mitchell Leisen. And really, what more could you ask? As good as Sturges was at directing his own work, he never had an eye to rival Leisen's—just compare the scene in which Jean Arthur wan...

Re: Ep. 28: Movies of the Teens • Buster Keaton Convention • 60s Drive-In Stars

I'd have to create a separate video file, which is possible, but then you wind up watching words appear in real time as it plays, which I have a hard time believing anyone would do, absent pictures to look at too. I would find a transcription service more useful, but even the automated ones are stil...

Driving would be shorter from Chicago or about the same from Detroit. Milwaukee is only shorter if you swim.

Actually, with a few people who did it the old-fashioned way, via check, plus the one or two who originally gave to my food site's Patreon before I set this up, we reached over 100% of the amount (about 110%). This is more than the bill is likely to be, so I've ended the campaign. When it all settle...

Re: A Harlett goes to Cinecon 54

The view that It's Great To Be Alive (1933) is inferior to the silent predecessor seems near-universal, and I'm not surprised. Changing the lead character from a milksop to a ladies' man is a pretty fundamental alteration.
It may be inferior, but I found it quite enjoyable nonetheless.
