Nope -- Thomas Tryon was not related to Glenn Tryon, per wikipedia at least.

Re: 2K/4K Restorations & Future BD Releases of Essential Sil

Looks like Paul Leni's masterpiece, The Man Who Laughs (1928), has gotten the 4K restoration treatment courtesy of Universal and the new score is being recorded next week, which will presumably be used for a BD release in the near future. This looks like a US release of the Region 2 version -- which I own, and which is most worth owning if you're interested in the film.

Re: THE WIND (1928) on TCM's THE ESSENTIALS this year?

It doesn't make sense anymore for Warners to hold onto Greed when it's going into the public domain in 2020. It would make sense for Warners to license the silent films out now while they can. Judging from the recent broadcast on TCM, Turner Classic Movies apparently owns the rights to the four hou...

Point taken, sure, but in that case they should re-consider how they phrase their e-mails. It clearly says "Your Order Has Been Shipped" not "Your Order Is Being Prepared And Will Ship Within The Next Few Days".

THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED -- Lotte Reiniger's 1926 animated feature might flirt with political incorrectness (why does the evil wizard have to be African?) but overall it's a work of such total rare beauty that I feel rather churlish in bringing it up at all. Reiniger gets more expression out ...

THE SAGA OF GOSTA BERLING in the very fine Kino DVD. I'd seen it years ago at Film Forum, and had been very impressed with it, and was glad to see that it still works. Great eventful story, defrocked priests and independent women and fires and pursuits across frozen lakes -- what's not to enjoy? And...

PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC in the new restoration, with the Voices Of Light score. Remarkable in every way. It really packs a wallop, there's just nothing else like it. Its virtues are known and widely sung, and all I can do is go along with them all. This is one of those classics that really deserves t...

Thanks for sharing that, Matt -- I like what Erickson says about the terrible 16mm prints obscuring the genius we film students were supposed to be seeing. Agreed -- it would seriously suck if Flicker Alley doesn't set up some kind of exchange program for those of us who purchased the initial release. The Alloy score rocked the Castro Theater this past June.
