Sad music piece.

Hello! I hope you can identify the title of a music piece, most often played in parodic sad scenes in cartoons and comic silents. The characters often weep when this tune is played. It is performed on violin and piano. Thanks!

"Carry On, Sergeant!"

"Carry on, Sergeant!" (1928, Canada). Director: Bruce Bairnsfather. Starring: Hugh Buckler, Jimmy Savo, Niles Welch and Lewis Dayton. This film must not be confused with the British comedy with the same name. If you devote 117 minutes of your life to "Carry on, Sergeant!", you'll probably watch two ...

Identify fragments of half-forgotten films

Hello! I may have asked about some of those films before. I really don't know. I am 56 years old, and I have watched films since I was 4 or 5 years old. They were shown on Norwegian or Swedish television. There are some films I watched in 1966 or 1967, which have put lasting impressions of me, but I...

Yes, "The Death Kiss" from 1932, where the stars of "Dracula", Bela Lugosi, Edward Van Sloan and David Manners appeared together.

Hello, I think you should include "The Student of Prague" (either the 1913 version starring Paul Wegener or the 1926 version starring Conrad Veidt) as well as "The Hands of Orlac", starring Veidt. "The Student of Prague" deals with a Doppelgänger. The premise of an evil copy of oneself has served as...

Dan Duryea

Yesterday I watched one of the emotionally most gripping films of the 1950's. No folks, it was neither "A Streetcar Named Desire", "A Place in the Sun" nor other of the overrated films which have been praised by critics. I am pretty sure that you haven't heard about this forgotten masterpiece: "Chic...

"Asphalt" (1929, Germany). Director: Joe May. Starring: Gustav Frölich, Betty Amann and Hans Adalbert Schlettow . The latter played in Anthony Asquith's brilliant late silent "The Cottage on Dartmoor". A few years ago I was searching for the roots of film noir on internet and found an interesting ar...

No, it is unfortunately not. I should perhaps have added that the film I watched was made around 2010-1016.

Spanish film

A few years ago I watched what I believe was a Spanish thriller. My memories are fragmentary. A man accidentally kills another man in a car accident. He didn't call the police, because his mistress was with him. I think a crane truck and a blackmailer also are involved. Can someone help me identifyi...

Re: What's The Last Silent Movie You Watched? [2017]

Right now I am watching the 1920 film "The Soul of Youth" directed by William Desmond Taylor. Like Raoul Walsh's 1915 film "Regeneration" this film also deals with an orphan becoming a street boy. While "Regeneration" is gloomy, "The Soul of Youth" is light. A great and entertaining film. After watc...

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2017)

Yesterday evening I watched the largely forgotten Soviet 1935 science fiction film "Loss of Sensation", directed by Alexandr Andriyevsky. Some people have noted certain similarities between this film and Fritz Lang's 1927 silent masterpiece "Metropolis". For instance does "Loss of Sensation" also ha...

Re: Post your Holiday Wish List & Win Movies from Flicker Al

My Christmas wish is very special. I hope that one day all lost films suddenly re-appear. There are lots of silents and early talkies I would like to get acquainted with. Among the latter are "quota quickies" made by WB's Teddington Studios in Great Britain in the 1930's. Think if all lost Norwegian...

New identity after train accident.

I am watching the 1936 film "Beyond the Deadline". A fugitive switches identity with a dead man in a trainwreck. I have seen something similar in another film, but I have forgotten the title. Do you know it? Thank you very much!

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2017)

The most recent film I have watched is the British "They Drive by Night" from 1938. It must not be confused with the 1940 American film with the same title. We often feel remorse when actors die young. Too seldom we feel remorse when those behind camera die young - with Irving Thalberg as an excepti...

Re: Mickey Rooney Grown Up, And In Noir !

"Quicksand" is, in fact, one of my noir favourites. Mickey Rooney is great in this film. As Andy Hardy he became the prototype of the all-American boy, the guy next door. For that reason it is very easy to sympathize with Rooney's unfortunate car mechanic in this film. He was mostly regarded as a co...

Re: Douglas Fairbanks and a mysterious lady

Olive Thomas, Mary Astor and Marjorie Daw are among the actresses suggested by members of the Facebook group. There is some doubt, however, that the mysterious lady was Olive Thomas, because she had no cleft in her chin (which Olive had). Since the photo probably was taken during Doug's Triangle day...

Douglas Fairbanks and a mysterious lady

I am a member of Facebook film group, and there has been a discussion about who the lady on the picture is. Several actresses have been suggested. I will not list their names here, because I don't want to influence your judgement. Thank you very much! ] https://c6.staticflickr.com/1/671/31523069645_...
