Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

Two nights ago was the 80th anniversary of Orson Welles' radio broadcast of War of the Worlds and since the centenary of the Great War armistice is also close at hand, I decided it was an appropriate time to revisit an alternate history documentary, The Great Martian War. H.G. Wells' classic tale of...

Re: They Shall Not Grow Old

I've had a keen interest in The Great War for over half a century and look forward to this film. Jackson is a devotee of the subject and will treat the subject with the utmost reverence and accuracy to detail. He curated an evolving four year Great War exhibit at a New Zealand museum, providing many...

Re: SQUIRRELS IN THE CINEMA

Charley Bowers has a squirrel hatch from a walnut in A Wild Roomer (1926). I believe there may be a couple of more squirrel appearances in other Bowers films but this is the one that immediately springs to mind. Robert Mitchum feeds a squirrel (Rupert?) in the park in Holiday Affair (1949), my favou...

Re: The Mary Pickford Foundation's (4K) Restoration Project

Of course, this begs the question of the status of licensing for commercial releases? I don't believe that I've heard anything since the lapsing of the agreement with Milestone about 1-1/2 years ago. Do we know if there is a new agreement and with who? If so, are we are going to seeing Blu-Rays or 4...

I haven't seen the 4 hour reconstruction of Greed and I'm not sure that I want to. I sat though La Roue and thought it would have been a far better film if trimmed to around 2 hours.

It can be seen behind the seated "reaper" character in the attached screen capture. Edit: Sorry, having problems with attachment because, "boa...

I believe the only silent films in my collection that I haven't watched are the Artcraft films of Douglas Fairbanks in The Modern Musketeer boxset. So, I'll likely watch Wild and Woolly.

Amazon.uk Canadian Carrier

Does anybody know what carrier Amazon.uk uses for shipping to Canada? I want to order an MOC title but if they arrive via Canada Post, the reduced duty free limit of $20 CDN and increased pick-up surcharge of $9.95 CDN makes it a deal killer. TIA.

In the Christmas Miracle category, I'd line to see a Blu-Ray boxset of Lillian Gish's MGM silent films. Realistically, I'd be very happy with Jeff Codori's biography of Colleen Moore.

As previously noted by fredhedges the scout in the foreground of photo #7 is a Fokker D.VII, while the bomber is a Martin and the far scout is unidentifiable. The bomber in photo #8 appears to be the same one as in photo #7. In this case we can see four widely and equally spaced wheels, indicative o...

Re: FRITZ LANG SILENT BLU BOX from Kino

In my experience, the biggest factor in Canad-USA cross border shipping is the carrier and associated brokerage fees. If it's shipped via the postal systems, then typically all you have to pay is the duty, if it's above the duty free amount, and whether you even pay that is all down to the mood of t...

Pandora's Box was released by Criterion in 2006, which was the same year of the first commercial Blu-ray Disc releases. New run releases on Blu-ray Discs were a big gamble at the time, let alone a silent. Besides the huge question mark regarding the consumer's acceptance of high definition, there wa...

Well, it's been almost five years since the original, theatrical release of The Artist and four years since it won Best Film at the Academy Awards. I rarely buy anything beyond films or books but several years back I came across an autographed Colleen Moore publicity photo. Yes, the horse is there for ballast but probably not to stabilize the trolley car as claimed in the article. More like it's there to destabilize the trolley and make it careen even more for dramatic effect. A horse's center of gravity is so high that it will make the car lean even more going around ...

My understanding is that these are the single BD releases from Universal's 2012 Classic Monsters box set.
