Re: 2019 UCLA Festival of Preservation

It was a mixed blessing all being run together like a typical festival. In the past, if there were programs I didn't want to see, I didn't have to go that night. On Saturday, I sat out 2-3 things between the "Stars of Jazz" and "Smouldering Fires;" I brought a book and sat and read at Peet's Coffee....

2019 UCLA Festival of Preservation

I attended most of the Saturday programs at UCLA's 2019 Festival of Preservation, which included the restoration of SMOULDERING FIRES, one reelers by Selig, Imp, Nestor, and Vitagraph, and two reels of the 1928 feature BEWARE OF MARRIED MEN with Myrna Loy and Irene Rich. Also included in the review ...

For 4 years during the 1940s, AMPAS gave Hollywood studio stills photographers awards and recognition for their work before discontinuing the tradition. Here's the story in a repeat post. https://ladailymirror.com/2019/02/18/ma ... raphers-3/

United Artists Incorporated February 5, 1919

Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith founded United Artists on February 5, 1919. It was the date the final articles organizing the company were signed, and the next date they recreated the signing for newsreel footage. https://ladailymirror.com/2019/02/04/mary-mallor...

Re: 11th Annual Watch That Movie Night is January 25!

I watched Ida May Park's BREAD from the Women Film Pioneers set. While only part of two reels, it gives a great taste of the film, along the same line as Lois Weber's SHOES from two years before and also starring Mary McLaren. It's #metoo 1918 style, where McLaren deals with a handsy and leering the...

Re: Bobby Driscoll story in current ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

The writer about Driscoll has also not had an alcoholic family member or been to Al-Anon. No one can "rescue" an addict; it is up to that person to hit rock bottom and decide they want help. You can do an intervention and send them some place, but they don't have to stay, and most don't. You cannot ...

Bessie Lasky, Painter

Jesse Lasky's wife Bessie was just as accomplished as he, a recognized poet and painter. Her works were exhibited in galleries around the world and acquired by museums. In the early 1930s she stated that she wanted a profession and career in case they ever lost it all, that movies could be ephemeral...

Re: Dawson City Preserved Films

I enjoyed the documentary but absolutely detested the dentist drill of supposed music throughout, it added nothing but tinnitus like those who can't get noises out of their head. I would have enjoyed a little more narration as well, especially since they used footage from the films to advance the st...

Re: LC Silent Feature Film database

Craig, does the Mack Sennett SLEUTHS AT THE FLORAL PARADE (1913) exist? Mack Sennett entered a car in that year's parade to film a comedy detective film starring Mabel Normand, Fred Mace, and himself. It would probably be one of the earliest films to show the parade.

The studios are still practicing illegal zoning, because the Chinese Theatre 6 is denied access to the top released movies, while the studios send them instead to the Arclight Hollywood, only about 10 blocks away.

Cafe Montmartre Ushers in Hollywood Night Life

Eddie Brandstatter's Cafe Montmartre ushered in fine luncheons and exciting night life to Hollywood in 1923, becoming a favorite place to Chaplin, Pola Negri, Tom Mix, Bebe Daniels, and others. It was featured as a location in Lloyd Hamilton's THE MOVIES, A KISS IN A TAXI, GET YOUR MAN, and SHOW GIR...
