Re: Adolph Zukor's ARTCRAFT and REALART production units
I don't know everybody's story that worked in Artcraft just Pickford's story. Adolph Zukor wanted to exploit Pickford naturally and I think she wanted more money for it. Artcraft allowed her to be a producer of her own films for a little while. Eventually Zukor wanted to make it where she and other ...

Re: Earliest Year of Birth?
One reason I found Daniel Blum's silent film pictorial book so amazing was, though illustrating a mere fifty years earlier at the time, it seemed positively ancient! This is never more evident than when you read commentary on silent film that comes from the early sound era. Think of the reissue of ...

Re: Earliest Year of Birth?
When I watch old Brograph shorts and see Mary Pickford make fun of a old man's beard, I wonder what she really thinks of him. Maybe she thinks "gee this guy is so much older than me, he probably was alive before cameras or airplanes were invented", or maybe "gee this guy is so old, he might have com...

Re: Gable's long rod
You know when I first saw that title, I was thinking of something else for some reason   Anyway, there were some funny exchanges between Lady Sylvia Ashley and Mary Pickford according to Whitfield's book. Apparently the ladies were on the same flight at one point during the 1930s and Pic...

Re: Rags and Riches: The Mary Pickford Collection
I felt the first two films PLRG and The Hoodlum were very sharp on blu-ray but Sparrows looked very soft focused unless it's just me. I don't really care since I'm just glad these wonderful films are finally available for home theater viewing and overall I think the quality of the blu-rays are great...

I'm saddened that Poor Little Peppina(1916) is difficult to purchase and own as I've seen brief clips of this film and it looks very interesting. I have no interest in Madame Butterfly as I don't care for white performers playing asian. I think they look absolutely ridiculous and caricature I'm curi...

I missed You Never Know Women last night because it just went too late. I stayed for everything today, and it's already 1 a.m., so here's a quick update for today... Both Charley Chase shorts, The Real McCoy (1930) with Edgar Kennedy and Thelma Todd; and the Columbia From Bad to Worse (1937) were v...

I don't think this film will ever be made but I think she'd make for an interesting biography movie. Whats difficult about her life is you'd have to actually cast a DW Griffith, Chaplin, Fairbanks,Lillian Gish, Dorothy Gish, Lottie and Jack, Zukor, everybody that was in the business for her film if ...

Douglas Fairbanks Mistreated Her
Mary and Doug always seemed like complete opposites to me for some reason. The funny thing about them is they both cheated on their spouses for years. Because the world was so smitten over them they didn't even criticize them for cheating, divorcing their spouses(in Pickford's case I think she had t...

Someone needs to do a proper bio of Buddy Rogers. I would like to know more about what made him tick. I always thought he and Mary were an odd pair but their marriage lasted until Mary's death. I absolutely agree. He always comes across as an incredibly sweet guy, but there was something strange an...

I haven't seen the documentary, but to me, she was a completely tragic figure in her later years. I know modern documentaries have a ridiculous habit of overstating the more sensational parts of a star's life, but it would be wrong to say that her life was all hearts and roses. Have you seen the fo...

The Pickfords and the Gishs were close family friends since they were youngsters traveling performing in plays during the turn of the century. I read somewhere that Lillian Gish and Mary Pickford became estranged in the 1960s and didn't see each other since due to Mary's alcoholism but I could be wr...

:) The November schedule is very exciting for the return of THE VIKING, and Chaney's WHERE EAST IS EAST. Plus the premier's of the newly restored versions of Pickford's POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL, and THE HOODLUM. I guess they are running those rather than the new SPARROWS? Maybe that will still be show...
