Very sad news. He was such a nice guy, and I too feared the worst when I did not hear from him in some time.

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2021)

Presumably designed as a follow-up to CIMARRON (1930), THE CONQUERORS (1932) not only stars Richard Dix and Edna May Oliver, but has a number of shared technical credits (Edward Cronjager, Howard Estabrook, etc.) as well, including a Max Steiner score. ... Note - Marilyn Knowlden, who plays Dix's d...

Re: What’s The Last Silent Movie You Watched ? (2021)

Interesting question. There are no sound versions that I'm aware of, but there have been numerous revivals of the two plays on which the film was based, Erdgeist and Lulu . They seem to have a habit of being disastrous flops, unfortunately. Judy Davis played the title character in a 1981 Australian ...

Re: Mental health and mental illness in silent films

Thanks, both of you. I checked my notes - the quote from Louis Reeves Harrison came from an article titled 'The Mind in Film', from the Moving Picture World of 11 July 1914 (an interesting read for many reasons, as it was a special issue designed to investigate current trends in the industry). It is...

Re: Anomalies in Films That Made You Curious as a Kid

Watching The Untouchables TV series, I'm constantly amused by the fact that every door has a window frame in it, but no window. The glass pane has been removed, presumably to avoid light reflections. Also noticeable in The Brady Bunch , where the kids carefully open an empty sliding door frame to g...

It is most likely The Romance of Elaine (1915). One of the most widely distributed stills of Pearl White featured her wearing the same outfit.

Re: Repairing Curling Stills?

I've had some good results with what I'd consider a fairly conservative treatment. Just keeping the photos in a cool place for a few weeks relaxed them a lot; they were nearly semi-circular when I received them. The emulsion was in excellent condition - honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd be...

Re: Garrett-Klement Pictures and quota designations

The British Quota Act was a complicated beast. Especially early on, many companies couldn't navigate the intricacies and ended up producing films that didn't qualify under the very specific requirements of the legislation. A qualifying production had to employ a certain percentage of British subject...

Re: Mental health and mental illness in silent films

It might be drifting from the topic a little, but pseudoscientific mental health stories were big in the teens, with a heavy emphasis on 'pseudoscientific'. It probably had something to do with the emergence of psychoanalysis as a discipline, but a lot more to do with the popular interest in parapsy...

That one about the face light reminds of the way a single candle is lit, and the entire set lights up as if it's Times Square on any New Year's Eve other than 2020-21. YouTube recently took down a bunch of twenty-year-old children's TV shows from Australian television that sat there for seven years, of interest to nobody but me and my small child, so apparently it can take a while for sone rights holders to take notice. I can't believe that I never noticed a flu pandemic reference in It's A Wonderful Life (1946) until this year. YouTube policy seems very erratic about taking down copyright violations; some go down immediately, some stay up there for years. There is also the comedy short There Ain't No Santa Claus (1926) with Charley Chase. I've heard rumors that it may be on the Silent Comedy Watch Party soon.
And, as per this thread, the rumors are correct! :)
