Ah, but it was worth it to make both Waveyboy and Gagman gag for awhile so that the screaming voices in their heads were telling them they could never watch the silent GOLD RUSH again because it was not the "true and complete" original version, something nearly impossible to see with so many Chapli...

When home video later came to the fore, calls went out for a proper restoration of The Gold Rush. Kevin Brownlow and David Gill took on the project on behalf of Chaplin’s estate. Gill wrote a terrific article about complications of that for Griffithiana (#54 --- October 1995), a film journal near i...

My urgency about this is greatly lessened by the fact that I've watched two Panasonic DVD recorders die inexplicable early deaths. I'm coming to the conclusion that just buying the damn discs from Warner Archive is probably cost-effective compared to spending $300 a year on a new recorder. I'm sure...

Re: Flicker Alley proudly announces the release of George Mé
The Haunted Castle from 1896 relies on shot-substitution, the filmmaker’s first trick discovery; it is a work in 21 shots at a time when everyone else in the world was making only single-shot films! So this is LE MANOIR DU DIABLE aka THE DEVIL'S CASTLE at last??? I am SO STOKED ABOUT THIS!!! Ever s...

Pardon if this is a stupid question, but would it still help if I bought THE DRAGON PAINTER and STELLA MARIS instead, or any other of your previously released silent titles that I don't yet own? Or would buying THE EXILES help more? Well, I was just joking, but any purchase helps us, of course. Oh ...

Realease your Charley Chase set and then I'll take your survey! Ya know, that was the first thought that raced through my mind when I read Dennis' post. I'm absolutely DYING for that to get released, and will order it the second it does, if it EVER does...perhaps on Blu-ray, eh, Dennis? But, since ...

I'll buy these on principle alone of course (though it's Bow and Moore that I REALLY want :) ), but all I've seen of the Talmadges is Connie in THE PRIMITIVE LOVER, which I thought was only OK. How might these films stack up against that one? So far, Connie just ain't grabbin' me like Clara and Coll...

I admit that the Warner website is pretty clunky and slow. That being said, I have never not been able to complete an order on it. The only thing I can think might be the problem is if someone is trying to navigate it using a dial-up connection. That would be a nightmare, but I'm sure anyone still ...

Oh, I tried to buy a whole stack of those Archive silents a few months ago...only to have their indescribably horrible website prevent me from doing so. This topic has probably come up before, but hey, let's have another round... After finally getting to cross METROPOLIS off the list ( :D ), my silent film holy grails currently are: RED HAIR FLAMING YOUTH The complete version of ELLA CINDERS (seems like most current prints are all derived from the K...

Well, they better at least release HER WILD OAT, since it's already restored. Colleen really needs to be rediscovered; I hope a lot of her "status unknown" films turn up to be extant. I dearly hope some more of Clara's films turn up too; lousy old Paramount left Clara Bow's films to rot in the vault...

Time to revive this thread. Now that the Talmadge girls are going to have their day in the DVD spotlight, isn't it high time for Miss Moore to get the same? Enjoyable, and very cool that it was made. The guy's no Billy West, but he's giving it a good try. His costume fits far too well though. His shoes are the right size for his feet, his hat is the right size for his head, his pants aren't baggy, and his coat is too loose. They needed some more effort ...

Although I've got issues with the projection speeds he advocates for some silent comedies (too SLOW, man!), Serge Bromberg is an angel of classic film rescue, preservation and promotion, and deserves this honor and much more; why not the Légion d'honneur? A Blu-Ray release of The General (with bonus features identical to last year's standard definition release) has been announced at Classic Flix with a scheduled date of 10 November. I fail to understand why you have no interest in seeing a version of METROPOLIS that is complete at last, instead of missing hunks of vital footage. Because: (1) The Kino version seems satisfyingly complete to me; (2) I am not wealthy and cannot afford to buy every latest "ultimate" edition of film...

I don't think I could stand yet another and presumably even longer version in 2010. I'm glad I waited for Kino's longer version of Metropolis and have absolutely no interest in getting an even longer reissue of it. Ditto for Phantom of the Opera, Battleship Potemkin, and Napoleon . There comes a po...
