Re: If you could do any one thing to promote silent film

Create a new 3D IMAX feature film that is entirely visual and without dialogue, enhanced by one of the world's greatest themes, a Pulitzer-worthy script, awe-inspiring cinematography, memorable performances, and a haunting music score that resonates long after leaving the theater, and ensure that p...

Re: when a restoration is NOT welcomed...

Replaced scores, repeated frames of film (sometimes at the wrong location), and improper speed are three items that annoy me. The last copy of Griffith's "Broken Blossoms" seen years ago had a reimagined orchestra score that did nothing to support the story, often going 'dead silent' for more than ...

Re: Criterion ~ The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog Blu-ra

Unfortunately, you can't do 1080p/60Hz with a Blu-ray, so you are stuck with either 720p/60Hz (lower resolution), 1080i/60Hz (combing artifacts unless your scaler is very good) or 1080p/24Hz (repeat frames). The consensus is that 1080p/24Hz should be used whenever possible if the frames can be repe...

1080p can be done right - http://www.bfi.org.uk/news/how-do-you-solve-problem-potemkin" target="_blank" target="_blank However, as Kino proved with Nosferatu, it can be messed up. HZ is interesting. Hopefully this film can be pieced back together from all existing elements someday, with stills & text to cover the gaps. I'd love to see it, and would donate toward such a project. Cohen permitting, of course.

Re: Criterion ~ The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog Blu-ra

20fps seems pretty slow for 1927 silents, but in any case, as they're not 24fps, they should be 1080i, not 1080p. If they were 1080i, we wouldn't have every fifth frame duplicated, resulting in jerky-motion.

Re: Criterion ~ The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog Blu-ra

I just got the disc, and both movies are incorrectly transferred at 1080p. For The Lodger , every fifth frame repeats; Downhill , every fourth. Yep. They effed them up. Which is strange, because these late-20s silent films would run just fine at 24 fps, and then there'd be no problem. It's maddenin...

Although I consider Hamilton probably the most grossly overrated comedian of the silent era (neck and neck with Snub Pollard and Ben Turpin), I'm in this business to support the proliferation of, and, eventually, world conquest (or re-conquest) by, classic silent comedy. So I'm in! Jim For a second...

I backed this, but I'm late to the Perez party, so I just ordered Vol. 1 along with Steve's companion book to prep me for the eventual arrival of Vol. 2 this fall. Always great to explore the work of an unfamiliar silent comedian, especially one I've heard such good things about. Super stoked!
