Reply Re WKE & DOMBEY AND SON
Thanks for the link to your site. I am familiar with your excellent work with silent films. Were you also a student of WKE? I was privileged to study under him (and Jay Leyda) at NYU in the late seventies and early eighties. I think you are right. I do seem to remember that there was a copy of DOMBE...

Reply Re DOMBEY AND SON 1917 & 1919
The 1919 film was the American release of the original 1917 British feature; not a separate film. I have a July 11, 1919 review from "Variety" in which the title is listed as "Dombey and Sons" (plural). Not sure if "Variety" misprinted the title or if it was in fact changed for the American release....

Reply: Re Edward Wagenknecht & Clarine Seymour
Hi -- Thank you so much for your response! You raise a good point. I should have mentioned that Professor Wagenknecht's 1987 book "Stars of the Silents" contains (in a slightly revised form) some of what is contained in the pamphlet. See pages 45--47. However, even Anthony Slide has not seen the ori...

Re Edward Wagenknecht & Clarine Seymour
This is a real longshot: Does anyone have a copy -- or know the whereabouts of a copy -- of "A Tribute to Clarine Seymour?" This was written by Edward Wagenknecht in 1920. It was a privately printed 15 page pamphlet. In Professor Wagenknecht's "As Far As Yesterday" he indicates that there were no mo...

Remembering Edward Wagenknecht
Yesterday (March 28) was the birthday of the great Edward Wagenknecht. Among his many books (!) is, of course, THE MOVIES IN THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. In my opinion, this is, and always will be, the single most important book ever written on the silent era. And I know that this is the view of most serio...

Wanted: 1933 Monogram OLIVER TWIST with Dickie Moore
Does anyone out there have a really good quality original print (and, of course, complete) of the 1933 Monogram version of OLIVER TWIST with Dickie Moore? It is a common title, but is usually found in pretty lousy film or video copies. I don't necessarily need to own it in 16mm. If you have such a p...

Re Copyright Status of RICH MAN'S FOLLY (1931)
Does anyone out there have any info on the copyright status of the 1931 Paramount feature RICH MAN'S FOLLY? It appears to be one of those odd titles that has slipped into the public domain but I can't seem to get a definitive answer on this without initiating the formal search process. I have no com...

Thanks for reply. That is a great DVD. Unfortunately -- and surprisingly -- it is not available over here in NTSC format as is the case with SILENT SHAKESPEARE. In any event, it contains an earlier short version of THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH. Hopefully, someone will come through with the later featur...

Wanted: Blackhawk Cricket On The Hearth
I'm looking for a VHS copy of Blackhawk's release of the 1923 American silent feature THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH. (If necessary, a Beta copy will do too...) As far as I know, this never came out on Laserdisc or DVD. Will also consider Super-8 or 16mm but would want a print with a music track. Also lo...

Abel Gance's NAPOLEON Lobby Cards For Sale
This is my first posting on NitrateVille. I am just reconnecting with the film scene after a long absence due to illness. Sadly, my wife has finally convinced me that some stuff has to go and so: I have six very unusual lobby cards from Abel Gance's NAPOLEON that I would like to sell. (Five horizont...
