Re: Possible Harold Lloyd Blu-ray release

There's a setting that I can change on my Panasonic blu-ray player to make the combing go away on Safety Last and Why Worry. If I'm remembering correctly, I think it's a changing a setting from "progressive" to "video." As for the running rate on Girl Shy, I thought it was 24 fps because there is a ...

Re: Color from Black-and-White: colorized photos

Thanks for the observations, Bob. I've wondered when this photo was taken. Sadly, the original press snipe is somewhat tattered, and I can't get much info from that (aside from the name of the dog). I went back this morning and added a little brown to Zorro. I had a fox terrier while I was growing u...

Re: Color from Black-and-White: colorized photos

I guess it's been a while since I've posted anything. I saw "The Phantom President" last year and thought that if I didn't know any better I would be thinking that George M. Cohan was trying to imitate Cagney. Here's a photo of Doug and Mary that I acquired a little while ago. I tried adding a...

Re: Bad or Average Films with Great Scores or Soundtracks?

A Countess from Hong Kong I wouldn't call this a bad film; average perhaps, but I've always enjoyed it, especially the hilarious Patrick Cargill, who steals the show. This film isn't nearly as bad as it's often made out to be IMO. And I agree, Charlie's score for this is great. I probably should ha...

Both versions seem to be the 7-reel version.

Re: Keaton's "The Saphead" on Blu Ray 7/10/12

Doing some prowling with the Wayback Machine, I was able to find David Shepard's article "Polishing the Stone Face" on a 1990s version of Kino's website. It has some interesting information about the restoration of Keaton's films for the Art of Buster Keaton series. http://web.archive.org/web/199801...

Re: Keaton's "The Saphead" on Blu Ray 7/10/12

I received my copy yesterday. While I haven't been able to sit down to watch the entire feature yet, I did watch a few minutes of both versions as well as the entire mini-documentary. There are two versions of the film - both the domestic and foreign cuts. The editing seems to be about the same in b...

Re: The Navigator on Blu-Ray 9/4

Thanks for the reply! I thought it was a situation similar to the footage missing from the original DVD of Sherlock Jr., but I see that it is not so clear cut in this case. It would be nice to see more complete versions of Hard Luck and Daydreams available on blu ray, but I sadly don't see that happ...

Little Caesar, thanks for the clarification. I never noticed any new material in Taylor's introductions compared with the earlier versions. Still, just gotta kvetch: They could have found somebody better to do the dubbing. I agree with you about the dubbing. The man who did the dubbing, Corey Burto...

The Navigator on Blu-Ray 9/4

The description courtesy of amazon.com: Brilliantly exemplifying Buster Keaton's ability to mime rich humor from the inanimate, The Navigator is a classic of the Golden Age of Comedy, centered on and about a single extraordinary prop: an immense five hundred-foot yacht. In a return to the ''pampered...

Re: Yahoo: 85-year-old Disney cartoon “Harem Scarem” unearth

From my understanding, when Disney rereleased Fantasia in the mid-1940s, the Deems Taylor introductions were significantly cut down (this was the version released in the early 1990s). While the film footage for the uncut Taylor introductions survive, the uncut audio portion does not survive. Hence, ...
