Re: Can anyone identify...
I posted the Juggernaut YouTube video because I knew that film had a similar train crash on water, but from the strips you posted, it doesn't look like the same film. A few shots looked very similar, I thought, but the youtube video was a "digest" so I thought that was perhaps just an abridged vers...

Re: Can anyone identify...
So one of them is 3 minutes from Juggernaut (1915) which is partially missing. Interesting, but what would be the best place for this?

Can anyone identify...
On a local second-hand site I spotted two fragments of silent movies. Pic 1 is from a thriller/crime??, pic 2 and 3 feature a train crash into a rising river and a woman being rescued (ca. 3 minutes).
Can anyone identify them? Anything important?

Re: The Great Wheeler and Woolsey Question
BFI lists the running footage as 1450 feet, which is shorter that the 20 or so minutes of running time. Of course this could be wrong, so someone close to BFI should try to view it if complete. If so I am sure we van get funding to make a new print. Excellent! A recording of the 16mm print exists, ...

At the BFI I didn't see a total running time anywhere for their copy? So how can we tell if it's shorter?LouieD wrote:BFI's print is about 3-4 minutes shorter than the one Rich and I have seen.

Perhaps the 16mm print has an extra scene somewhere? This is the kind of thing that will probably be overlooked if it ever gets a DVD release.LouieD wrote:BFI's print is about 3-4 minutes shorter than the one Rich and I have seen.

Re: Wheeler and Woolsey
That must be the collector somewhere in New England who was rumoured to have the only copy on 16mm, but who preferred to remain anonymous. You were lucky, but for the rest of the world who don't happen to know him, it didn't exist. It's for example skipped in the book (by Watz I think). Just to cor...

Or the TV version cuts some sex/violence to be more family friendly, and puts in some other scenes to make up for the lost time.coolcatdaddy wrote:Sometimes, old tv showings of movies turn up interesting material.

Well, I know some people who have copies. But can you be more specific? What do you want them for, and what shows/episodes in particular? (There might be hundreds of episodes like that. Several are on DVD, some are public domain, some are available but from shady sources...) I was recently looking i...

Re: New Gloria Swanson Biography Coming Next Year
By the way, speaking of Swanson I just want to say that Mio filgio Nerone, or Nero's Weekend/Mistress, which is usually panned, wasn't actually that bad. It's just that the English dub really changed what the film was about by swapping scenes around and dubbing totally different lines, enlarging Bar...

Re: Music & Film: THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI
Siegfried Kracauers FROM CALIGARI TO HITLER is indeed an interesting book, the only problem is it's wrong, and Kracauer does indeed distort the facts regarding the amount of influence the dark-souled expressionist German films had on the German Public at large at the time. The truth is, a lot of th...

Too bad all those millions of illegal aliens don't wake up...and return whence they came. Sorry for the native Americans, but we in Europe don't want all the white Americans back. Re: Attention 16mm Collectors !
I don't know if anything has changed since 2009/2009, but Peter Greenwood was using heavy-handed tactics to try to obtain prints of this TV series. When a reputable 16mm dealer listed prints for sale on eBay, Mr Greenwood had the auctions stopped because he claimed that the Jack Chertok productions...

Perhaps it's not too far off topic to mention that Edison wasn't the first to invent the light bulb even if the history books say he did. From Wikipedia: Sir Joseph Wilson Swan (31 October 1828 – 27 May 1914) was a British physicist and chemist. He is most famous for inventing an incandescent light...

I've also noticed that sometimes it appears that the close captioning on TV shows does not reflect the final edit of the film. Sometimes there are lines in the captioning that have been edited from the soundtrack. Sometimes it even seems to be a previous draft of the script as the captioning has to...

Re: On the copyright/public domain question...
Some studios (can you hear me, Paramount?) don't really seem to care much about their older films and in many cases do not even have film elements. They probably don't know they own them. No, Paramount can't hear you. The Paramount collection (1929-1947) is owned by Universal, which explains why th...
