Re: Great First Films, then Decline?
Of course, the Snarky folk would mention that Welles Guy in this category, but I like too many of his later films to do so myself, and it really is too amazing a life and career. Thank you! I like Ambersons just as much as Citizen Kane , even with the forced cuts and different ending imposed in Wel...

Re: Biograph Films and Early Copyright Protection
Years ago I saw a program of early films at MoMA preserved from paper prints.
Too bad the copyright office stopped requiring them, think of all the films that wouldn't be "lost!"

Re: The Runaway and Rough House Rosie Discovered?
In regard to The Runaway and Rough House Rosie , could David Stenn be reached through his publisher? I would like to know if they are around also. It's true the footage looks fine. I watched the whole documentary last night on Youtube and enjoyed it. Clara clearly had a lot of torment in her life bu...

I looked at the Lon Chaney film on WA instant briefly last night, the quality looks very good on the Roku for a film circa 1920.

Re: Interview with Mae Murray from 1960
Ankerich interviewed her son and quoted him as of 2010; I believe he is still alive and has children of his own.
As far as reconciliation, he did visit Mae during her final illness.

Re: Interview with Mae Murray from 1960
Gagman, according to Ankerich, Mae was born in 1885 but kept that a secret. Wiki says Rudy was born in 1895.Roseha,
Wasn't she actually 5 or 6 years older than Rudy?
I have The Merry Widow on my Tivo, looking forward to seeing it.

Re: Interview with Mae Murray from 1960
I just read Michael Ankerich's excellent bio of Mae Murray, and while he is sympathetic as one could be, it seems clear that part of her problem was that she couldn't bear to play an older character even as she became older herself. Of course it was very sad to read about her final years. She did ha...

Ohh Silent John Barrymore as Heathclliff, love the idea! For some reason the sound version with Olivier made him way too nice.NOT as Heathcliff! .... But John Barrymore, now, that might work.
By the way, I don't think Olivier won the Oscar for that role - didn't Robert Donat win in 1939?

Re: Has anybody seen this before? 1922 Color Test
The Kodachrome may not be entirely realistic, but it's as indescribably beautiful as a Vermeer. Oh, I didn't mean it that way, I love the look of the early Kodachrome too. I have family photos (I'm four years old in them) of us taken in Kodachrome, they are beautiful and look as bright as new. I re...

Re: Has anybody seen this before? 1922 Color Test
The Eastman House has uploaded this to Youtube:
Love the music they play with it. I find it fascinating to watch silent film in color, it almost seems like a weird conflict to me, though the Kodachrome here isn't quite realistic.

I havent' seen that, if it exists, but one of Buster's bios (I think the Tom Dardis) indicates that Buster lent (more like donated) a great deal of money to Arbuckle post-scandal.Keaton gave him an anonymous role in some silly elevator scene

Re: I cancelled Netflix
I've been thinking about this myself. What Netflix is useful for is streaming to an Ipad or a Roku if there's nothing on TV, or if you are somewhere with almost, or no cable channels. But now I've subscribed to Fandor, and I also get Classic Flix, who are getting a little speedier about sending the ...

Re: Grand Hotel (1932)
I love Barrymore's voice but I also love his work in silent films. From what I've seen the farther back in time you go the better he is (quality of the film at hand notwithstanding - the craziness of The Sea Beast for example). I often feel that I can see him thinking in his silent roles.

Re: Greed (1924)
I read McTeague in college and this is one occasion of my feeling the film is definitely superior to the source book. I may be wrong (college was a long time ago!) but, for instance, I don't believe Frank Norris came up with the idea of McTeague and Trina being married with a funeral procession goin...

Re: Announcing the 5th Annual Watch That Movie Night!
I just finished SECRETS OF THE NIGHT. I found it reminiscent of THE BAT/THE BAT WHISPERS, as in both featuring spooky house/mystery/comedy with a twist at the end. I have to say that I pretty much suspected the twist - that the "victim" Robert Andrews (James Kirkwood) who supposedly wanted to be sho...

Classic Flix sent out an email about possibly streaming sometime last year, haven't heard back yet about it. I would love to see them do it.
I will definitely see if I can connect with Warner Archive on my Roku/TV. I'm already very happy with Fandor, and hope I can watch both.

Re: No longer able to record DVDs from TCM HD!
I bought a Tivo last summer and found out after the fact that Time Warner Cable blocks copying to Tivo's "Desktop" software (which transfers to Ipad, etc) anything but the broadcast stations and a few random channels. I imagine the same will apply to DVD.
