BTW, some H.G. Wells that could have been but never were: The Time Machine: Wells met with Robert W. Paul way back in 1895 to construct a multi-media (including film) presentation. The King Who Was a King: Wells wrote it as kind of a film treatment but without much hope that it would ever see fruiti...

Apparently, there is also a surving copy of a 1921 German adpatation of The Island of Doctor Moreau, Die Insel der Verschollenen , in the German archives. Boy have I been dying to see that one. I've heard rumors that it is part Moreau but that there are touches of The Mysterious Island as well. Steve

Well, Wells (hmm what a start) did have some early science fiction loosely adapted. In A Trip to the Moon, for instance, the astronomers crash down, encounter volcanoes, have a dream sequence, discover snow and strange large plants, strike Selenites who are easily destroyed...that's all pretty much ...

Personally, I found Les Vampires a very trying experience. I just couldn't get into it and never re-visited the film. For that reason, I've passed on both Judex and Fantomas . Possibly echoing what others have said... Les Vampires was somewhat tedious for me. Judex, on the other hand, I found lots ...

The absolute best book (in English, at least) on the man is Artificially Arranged Scenes: The Films of Georges Melies by John Frazer. In spite of the title, there is quite a bit of bio. It's hard to track down a used copy tho' and you may have to try the library. Others listed in rough order of dept...

"BA" logo
An out-of-the-blue question here....
I've got several tapes thru trades of European silents which have a simple "BA" logo stamped on them. I suspect this was a TV station of some kind (maybe before ARTE) but have no way of knowing. Anyone know for sure?
Thanks,
Steve

Pretty sure that Polish author Stanislaw Lem once wrote a book or two composed of nothing but fictional book reviews.Einar the Lonely wrote:Once the scholarly and personal anger is gone, maybe his writings can now be considered as art, as literature, pastiche, capriccios or some kind of meta-criticism. .

Like everyone else, I think this is tremendous and all involved deserve a huge, huge pat on the back. 2 questions: - in quickly reading the link for the Media History Digital Library, I got the impression that the original magazines are being digitalized. Is that correct? Somehow, I always thought t...

I eagerly looked forward to this film when it was put out by DFI a few years back. It's a curiosity for sure, but I enjoyed it enough to watch it several times. One thing I noticed it the imagery of the Martians bore a striking resemblance to those in Charles Hawtrey's film and play A Message from M...

I love early Soviet science fiction oriented films. Aelita as well as Luch Smerti, Miss Mend and Cosmic Journey have all proved to be worthwhile. (Although can Cosmic Journey be considered a "silent"? iirc there is a sync'd music sound track & it was made in the 30s). For that matter, the USSR turne...

Greta, I enjoyed both but especially liked Himmelskibet (A Trip to Mars). That's probably because I couldn't keep from comparing the Danish "End of the World" to Gance's (which in uncut form is vastly unappreciated in my opinion). It's been a while since I watched them but The Flying Circus / The Be...

Thanks. Actually, I messed up. I was thinking about a film called "THE Intrigue" from the prior year.

Just curious. What was your opinion of the film?Harold Aherne wrote:

Will you be covering the recent silent horror films CALL OF CTHULHU (2005) or PROMETHEUS TRIUMPHANT: A FUGUE IN THE KEY OF FLESH (2008)? We've had to limit our parameters somewhere on an effort this large. Alas, nothing after the silent era; serials and shorts are excluded too. Steve PS I agree wit...

Milestone: McF book on silent horror, sci fi and fantasy
As many of you may know, led by John Soister, Henry Nicolella, Bill Chase, Harry Long and I have been toiling away on a book covering U.S. feature-length silent horror, science fiction and fantasy films. Recently we hit a milestone; our 300th essay is ready to go! Now this project has taken longer t...
