BTW, some H.G. Wells that could have been but never were: The Time Machine: Wells met with Robert W. Paul way back in 1895 to construct a multi-media (including film) presentation. The King Who Was a King: Wells wrote it as kind of a film treatment but without much hope that it would ever see fruiti...

Apparently, there is also a surving copy of a 1921 German adpatation of The Island of Doctor Moreau, Die Insel der Verschollenen , in the German archives. Boy have I been dying to see that one. I've heard rumors that it is part Moreau but that there are touches of The Mysterious Island as well. Steve

Well, Wells (hmm what a start) did have some early science fiction loosely adapted. In A Trip to the Moon, for instance, the astronomers crash down, encounter volcanoes, have a dream sequence, discover snow and strange large plants, strike Selenites who are easily destroyed...that's all pretty much ...

Personally, I found Les Vampires a very trying experience. I just couldn't get into it and never re-visited the film. For that reason, I've passed on both Judex and Fantomas . Possibly echoing what others have said... Les Vampires was somewhat tedious for me. Judex, on the other hand, I found lots ...

The absolute best book (in English, at least) on the man is Artificially Arranged Scenes: The Films of Georges Melies by John Frazer. In spite of the title, there is quite a bit of bio. It's hard to track down a used copy tho' and you may have to try the library. Others listed in rough order of dept...

"BA" logo

An out-of-the-blue question here....

I've got several tapes thru trades of European silents which have a simple "BA" logo stamped on them. I suspect this was a TV station of some kind (maybe before ARTE) but have no way of knowing. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks,

One that comes to mind very recently is that "Willis O'Brien made Along the Moonbeam Trail". The Academy just showed a restoration to a group of folks who are unanimous in that it's the work of Herbert M. Dawley instead.

I bought a copy (from ebay?) a while ago. It's a worthwhile purchase. If memory serves, the slides are separated by categories so that you can zero in easier.

Pretty sure that Polish author Stanislaw Lem once wrote a book or two composed of nothing but fictional book reviews.

There are 2 good books on photoplay editions. The 1st is called "Photoplay Edition" by Emil Petaja and the 2nd is "Photoplay Editions - A Collectors Guide" by Rick Miller. Both state that the G&D printing of The Iron Horse should have 8 stills. I'd guess that probably someone removed them.

I love early Soviet science fiction oriented films. Aelita as well as Luch Smerti, Miss Mend and Cosmic Journey have all proved to be worthwhile. (Although can Cosmic Journey be considered a "silent"? iirc there is a sync'd music sound track & it was made in the 30s). For that matter, the USSR turne...

Milestone: McF book on silent horror, sci fi and fantasy

As many of you may know, led by John Soister, Henry Nicolella, Bill Chase, Harry Long and I have been toiling away on a book covering U.S. feature-length silent horror, science fiction and fantasy films. Recently we hit a milestone; our 300th essay is ready to go! Now this project has taken longer t...
