Bob Birchard answered: ....... All of the titles were replaced in the 1930 version. The two original titles I've seen were in Irvin Willat's collection. Willat supervised the editing and finishing of the film. Willat's titles had illustrated backgrounds. I do not recall any of the titles in the sur...

Ince's Civilization
A Question:
Does anyone know the story behind the print(s)/releases of Thomas Ince's Civilization? I have sources that say it was a whopping 10 reeler but the Kino video that I have is only 85 minutes.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

As far as I know, only four of the films they made there survive.
I have your book on Gaston Melies but it's packed away at the moment.
Which ones survive? Thanks for refreshing an old man's memory.

Thanks, David!! I've read the synopsis and, yes, there are no Verne characters or storyline. But Paul Hammond , in his book Marvelous Melies, does make a strong case that Melies "borrowed" some of the visual concepts of the sea monsters in his film from the original illustrations done by Edouard Rio...

Here's mine, as I sit with my son waiting for them to drop Dick Clark from Times Square... BEST SILENT ON TV I'm only 2/3 of the way through Miss Mend but I really enjoy it— particularly part 2. If part 1 put you off with its sometimes unsteady mix of Lang-style villainy and goofiness from the hero...

I don't know anything about your specific title. But, I've been wondering recently also about what exactly being included on the National Registry really signifies. Just a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the Pearl White serial Exploits of Elaine is on the list. Now, apparently all of the chapter...

This is mainly from my recollection of reading "The First Hollywood: Florida and the Golden Age of Silent Filmmaking" by about a year ago. But I seem to recall that he wrote a bit about traveling film-makers who would wonder about, entice locals into his films and use that as a promotion to exhibit ...

Thanks for this post, Bruce. Up until now, the only source for this film I've found is a borderline grey-mkt vhs tape years ago (low quality and taped on slow speed). Ever since, I've been dying for a good copy with English translations. (I might be one of the only people to watch the film and read ...

What censorship records are available and how do you got about accessing them? The only ones that I am aware of are from New York and Kansas.Dana wrote:I've been spending a lot of time recently pouring over censorship records from various state agencies.

Ned Thanhouser once had online an Excel File Database of all Thanhouser films available. I downloaded it way back when (the date on my file is Dec 2002). There are 6 entries for Jekyll and Hyde. This is the only one listing a 35mm: Title Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Date 1/16/1912 Location LOC Ref QDB 8/...

Also from the silent era but hardly silent is the audio recording (pre-1910) of the transformation scene by Len Spencer staight from the play by Fish and Forepaugh. It's probably still online somewhere. In a bit of a stretch, Paul Lindau adapted Stevenson's play as Der Anderer (The Other). This was ...

I do like Fairbanks, Chaney, and Houdini (I know he's a ham, but he is magnificent). I just took a moment to update myself on this folder. Tommie, your post stuck out. Mainly because I'm not sure I ever ran across anyone that shares my opinion of Houdini as an actor. I just get such a *kick* out of...
