Yes, Alf was born on 26 January 1885 in Richmond, Victoria.

Why did he shave so many years off his age? Didn't everybody, youth being a virtue in a youthful industry? The 27-year-old Snub Pollard lost five years off his true age in a 1916 press clipping.
