Re: Moderator Chris Jacobs has passed away
Thank you Frederica for sharing these Fotografs. Being adopted by a School teacher and a stay-home Mother, Dad used to bring canisters of films (after showing them to his class) Mom would clear the Dining room, soda pop, pop-corn ready and with my four sisters would watch films on the beige wall, th...

I had not made a masthead because I didn't have good photos, but Robert McKay posted one on Facebook and kindly let me use it, so there will be a masthead in Chris' memory for the next couple of days. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4478/37321360190_8a5bbed029_z.jpg Thanks Mike, He rightfully deserv...

Re: The Sea Wolf (1941) Finally Restored to Original Length!
SEA WOLF was cut in 1947 for its first reissue so that it would fit on a double bill with another film (I forget which). The actual camera negative was cut and the trims discarded. Consequently, all subsequent reissues on video, dvd and for TV showings were only able to use the 1947 print as source...

Thanks for the information, perhaps I will upgrade to the UK blu-ray release of Nosferatu, unless the problem has been taken care of on the upcoming Kino box set.

Re: FRITZ LANG SILENT BLU BOX from Kino
Maybe they'll do a Murnau box and fix Nosferatu too. That is the biggest hot mess of a crappy bluray that I ever got suckered into buying. Would you care to elaborate, about the "maybe" Murnau Set? by Kino DVD/Blu-Ray and/or the Nosferatu Blu-ray (perhaps, the one you mentioned on your post?) I wou...

Re: How many films are in your collection?
No films in my collection, but the number of DVD's, VHS's, and Beta's would be pretty staggering if I ever stopped to count them (which would take about three days to do!) Sitting at the desk in my den at home, I am facing four storage cabinets which each hold probably 100+ discs/cassettes. They ha...

There is a new restoration of ASPHALT out on bluray. Unfortunately it seems to be only available as part of Murnaustiftung's "Jubiläumsedition" released in 2016. https://www.amazon.de/50-Jahre-Murnau-Stiftung-Jubil%C3%A4umsedition-Blu-rays/dp/B01K429ZUY/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503833797&sr=8-...

Manuel Sánchez Navarro perhaps? I have some films with him but very much later ones than 1931, and he does look so much different.

Re: DIE LIEBE DER JEANNE NEY - new restoration
About three evenings ago I watched the Kino release, and wondered after its release on video silence followed. Glad to know there is a restored update on it. Last night I watched Joe May's Asphalt, and I believe this one does deserves some upgrade as well. I am not an expert on scores, but both of t...

Having been content with the gorgeous releases of Wings, Sherlock Holmes and The Big Parade. I would say the release I was longing for, in all its splendour was Napoleon.
Let's hope The Wind, The Crowd and Greed will follow soon.
My choice on this matter would be Varieté.

Charles Emmet Mack is not that obscure a name for silent film buffs. He had leading roles in two D. W. Griffith film I have seen, "Dream Street" (1921) and "America" (1924). He also appeared with Charles Farrel in "The Rough Riders"(sadly lost.) I wish there was a way to view the fragments that sur...

Re: AMPAS: A Celebration of the David Shepard Film Collectio
Correction...the home movie footage of David Shepard came from me. I provided this to Serge for the AMPAS and SFSFF programs. This comes from about a 5-min film I found in a can marked "David 1942-43" that was in David's collection. Library of Congress scanned it for me. If I get the OK of the fami...

I also have his Lost Films book, which is one of my favourite ones, and the new one seems like it is going to be every bit as interesting. I am happy with the VHS release from MGM and it looks/sounds fine to me. It cannot be that bad for it not to be released on DVD. That is one title I do look forward to upgrade. The one film title that instantly came to my mind was Phffft.
If it is ever shown again at a theater, I would feel foolish trying to utter the title at the box office window.

Such sad news about Mr. Shepard. I felt a lump in my throat when I read the news.
I, like so many fans of silent films will be forever grateful for all the work he has done for film preservation.
My heart goes out to him & all his loved ones during this ordeal.

I watched The Wind last night . If anyone here has read the novel by Dorothy Scarborough can tell that Mr. Sjöström achieved a remarkable film with Ms. Lillian Gish and Lars Hanson. This will be the third William S. Hart video on my collection. I don't know if it has been mentioned here previously but, Flicker Alley released The Toll Gate/His Bitter Pill, double feature on DVD-R not too long ago.
I plan to buy Wagon Tracks soon. I am anxious to know what it looks like on Blu-ray.

Re: So what did Conrad Nagel ever do, anyway?
From all the films I have seen him in, I like his silents better. I believe he thought of his career as just a job, nothing pretentious about it. In the Kevin Brownlow book, The Parade's Gone By, as another member wrote earlier, he would go out with his wife and make comments about nothing playing b...
