Re: Flicker Alley Chaplin Mutuals

I received my set last week and watched a couple films last night with my oldest son (he's 9) -- we watched "The Floorwalker" and "The Fireman" and they both looked amazing! We are not, in any way, experts on Chaplin cinema -- just fans -- so I don't have any nitpicks of missing footage or anything ...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

Wow, David -- this sounds incredible! Thanks so much for the information and for all the work you and others have put into this effort. I can't wait to see the results! By the way, I'm a little new in my discovery of loving Chaplin and just purchased the Keystone set -- which, if I'm not mistaken, I...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

Thanks for that great info. Sounds like the Blu-ray set could be really nice. Hopefully it comes out sooner rather than later!

Are the Van Beuren editions different versions with different takes than the ones David Shepard is working with?

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

I have yet another question for the Chaplin pros around here -- how do the Mutuals being offered by ReelClassicDVD compare to this 90th Anniversary Edition? ReelClassicDVD claims their set is "the definitive" collection, but it sounds like the 90th Anniversary set includes new footage? I'd like to w...

Re: BBC INTERVIEWS-PICKFORD;KEATON;LLOYD;CHAPLIN

Yes, as others have already said, the content is blocked if you're outside the UK. However, I believe this interview I've found on the webpage of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK or Norsk rikskringkasting) is the same interview: http://www.nrk.no/skole/klippdetalj?topic=nrk:klipp/615463"...

Re: BBC INTERVIEWS-PICKFORD;KEATON;LLOYD;CHAPLIN

They don't work for me either (in the U.S. on a brand new Mac, so software is up to date). Bummer. I'd love to hear the Chaplin and Keaton interviews. If anyone who can hear them has a way to share, let me know!

Re: City Lights November 2013

Actually it does make sense, but you have to shift your focus somewhat, and also understand Chaplin's production methods to get a full sense of the choices being made. The use of the term "inferior out takes" is at least a bit misleading in the context of a Chaplin production. A standard of quality...

Re: City Lights November 2013

That is a shame -- mind boggling, too. It makes no sense! So, what makes the Image versions of the First National shorts and the features superior to other versions, if they're all using the same reconstituted takes? (Thanks again, by the way, for sharing all this info in this thread -- and apologie...

Re: City Lights November 2013

Thank you for the tip about ReelClassicDVD. Wow, I don't understand why the Estate wouldn't want to preserve the original movies, as they were originally released -- even as alternatives or extras? It makes no sense to me. Is the same the case for Charlie's movies previous to the First National stuf...

Re: City Lights November 2013

The First National shorts were largely reconstituted from inferior takes in the '40s, due to the original negs being worn out from excessive printing, and these are unfortunately the versions touted as "official" by the Estate. However, these reconstituted versions were cut, decades later, by Chapl...

Re: City Lights November 2013

Most of the "original" footage, especially for the earlier films is gone. And the reason it was replaced was not always just because Chaplin decided to alter and reedit the story line. In many instances it was because original footage was simply worn out from overuse and no longer up to Chaplin's v...

Re: City Lights November 2013

Unfortunately the old Image DVDs are now pricey collector's items, thanks to the Estate's ridiculous and absolutely maddening policy of only releasing the cut reissue versions of these classics. You'd think that if they could make an exception for THE GOLD RUSH, they'd just get over themselves alre...

Re: City Lights November 2013

Not good, but not half as bad as the execrable MODERN TIMES cover. And at least this film will be complete, unlike MODERN TIMES. I will definitely be buying. Will you explain how the Modern Times release is incomplete? I bought the Criterion Blu-ray and noticed that the "uncut" version of Charlie's...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

Well, I do kinda feel bad about discouraging a sale of restored Chaplin films, but I do feel that people should know what they're getting. I know I'd feel burned if I paid the same premium price of the original set for a reissue version without the booklets and multi-page disc packaging. If this se...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

...it is certainly the best on the market, the most complete, and with awesome extras (at least in the original issue, not so much the current cut-rate reissue, which is missing both booklets and has crap single-spindle packaging but is still being sold at the higher price)... Interesting! Well, th...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

Charlie, Amazon failed to reorder the Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition but I prompted Image who presumably prompted Amazon so it should soon be back in stock. Gotta wonder what would happen without my nagging ... There will be a BD set next year but it will be quite different from the curre...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

Thought I'd try bumping this and giving it one more try. My original question is in the post above. It's funny because, for just a few hours today, Amazon had this disc listed for only $34 along with a note that said "Arriving August 19" or something like that. That note is now gone (along with that...

Re: Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition back in print

I'm hoping someone can help me out with this question -- I keep almost pulling the trigger on purchasing the Chaplin Mutuals 90th Anniversary Edition on Amazon (although it's not currently available from Amazon, only from other sellers), but there's a comment indicating that this edition has been pu...
