Re: BFI's Chaplin Mutual Blu-Ray
I see that you mention that the First National Shorts are coming but I don't see where they are listed. Are they coming with The Kid or in their own separate release? As for these being the "Daddy" versions, whilst I'm sure you'll be right when it comes to the UK releases, I'm holding out hope that ...

Is that true about the First National Shorts? I only heard about The Kid coming as part of this big re-release in the UK.

Re: BFI's Chaplin Mutual Blu-Ray
If someone is interested, I've wrote an (italian) article on my Wordpress about the differences between the Flicker Alley version and the BFI: In fact I consider this new english version the best in home-video market. https://silentvalerio1927.wordpress.com/2015/05/06/conferme-dal-bluray-bfi-chapli...

Re: BFI's Chaplin Mutual Blu-Ray
The Korean set only has blu-rays of the feature films, which are derived from the exact same transfer as every other hidef release. Is that really true though? Criterion had to go out of there way to redo The Gold Rush and City Lights for there releases because the available transfers were not good...

Re: BFI's Chaplin Mutual Blu-Ray
You've misread a bit of the review. It's the Divisa set that is 25fps. The BFI is 24fps. It is a definite improvement over the Divisa though; some of the shorts from that set were from older restorations and the general PQ of the BFI is better overall ( flick between the first cap after the intertit...

Same here Tom, this still appears as Domestic only to International buyers, and does not allow one to proceed past the address page.

Re: Non-24fps silents on Blu mastered at 1080p causing jitte
I see, I was just going by the credits at the end. Indeed it's the strict duplication that is key to getting a good release. BOAN from Eureka/MoC for instance is a strict 1, 2, repeat, 3, 4, repeat...etc. pattern. I understand Potemkin from Kino features 7 instances of repeating frames per second, b...

Re: Non-24fps silents on Blu mastered at 1080p causing jitte
THE BIG PARADE and the Kino NOSFERATU are indeed complete messes; quite sad. Thank you for the detailed breakdown on why this is NOT a display-specific issue. You're welcome, though I must stress that it's also true to say that this is NOT a 1080p issue either. Nick_M's video is excellent in demons...

Re: Caligari Blu-Ray
"Interpolation" would be when you use knowns A and C to create unknown B (i.e., a faked frame). A repeated frame is not interpolated. It's just repeated. It's certainly the term used within the industry for repeating frames, and the definition of the word is "to insert between other elements or par...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2d3V7CxuY8g Warner Archive have just published this video in hopes of clearing up confusion about their Blu-rays being pressed or burned (as I said earlier, they're all pressed and always will be). I think it's interesting and relevant to this topic that clearly enoug...

Nope, that's why I used the word "interpolated" (frame repetition) rather than interlaced
Every 3rd frame repeats and it plays smooth as a baby's butt

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
Forgive me for not being precise enough, but you've misinterpreted what I meant. Whenever I add a new film to my collection, I no longer have the luxury of knowing if it'll be something I'll like. Whereas in the past I've had a long list of films I've seen through non-disc mediums (cinema, TV, etc),...

No surprise that I'm very happy to hear that. Rest assured that I'll buy them whatever the titles are (even Phantom of the Opera, which I already bought twice on Blu-ray, as I assume you'll bring something new to the table).

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
I hope FA don't feel the need to defend themselves. I'm not attacking them, just voicing my disappointment, pointing out another market out there. At this point in my life I'm no longer buying films I've seen before. I've ran out. Now everything is a blind buy. Between two obscure films I've never s...

Re: Caligari Blu-Ray
I understand that it is standard practice at the BFI to use real film to re-photograph the intertitles, rather than going digital.David Alp wrote:And then they re-photograph it using very fine-grain film, or probably just scan it using digital equipment.

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
I am shocked they've made this decision. Describing it as shocking is accurate, and can not be taken as close to vitriolic. There's nothing wrong with being shocked, is there? As for describing the product as crappy, I was referring to burned discs. Whether they're coming from FA or WAC or Milestone...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
Language such as you use is ineffective. Calling someone an uncaring, stupid, evil piece of shit and then telling him what he should do rarely works. This is absolute hyperbole. I haven't directed insults towards FA or demanded they do something else. Indeed I've kept the vitriol this decision has ...

What makes you think it's burned? There is no commercial BD-R format and WAC do not use one. They've confirmed many times that all of their Archive Blu-rays are and always will be pressed.

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
I know I've made a big deal about Blu-rays but really this is more about not wanting to see these titles relegated to worthless MOD discs. It's just a shame. But if people actually want this then I'm sure the campaign will be a success and I'll just have to accept it. If it fails I hope that FA will...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
I'm sorry things have had to get so unpleasant. I for one have had little trouble getting my hands on any disc I've wanted. Yes depending on where you live it can be more difficult than elsewhere but there's always a way if you know where to look. But I've always considered myself an international c...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A
True, that's fair enough, I've made an assumption there. That price is in line with Milestone's own MOD discs though (of much rarer, unheard of titles). This whole thing has just left me disappointed is all. I corresponded with FA when their latest calendar came out because it featured The Lost Worl...

Sometimes you get ones where the content on the Blu-ray is so vast that they have to spread it out over 2, yes 2(!) DVDs. So those packages are advertised as 3 disc releases!

If you can afford the $50-70, then bully for you. But it might be worth remembering that many people cannot . If there was money to be made out of putting these titles out on Blu-ray, then it would be happening. It appears that is not the case. In the meantime, there is nothing wrong with keeping s...

Re: New Region B Blu-Ray Releases
Because it's cheaper to produce one SKU, instead of two. They have a customer base that is divided between DVD buyers and Blu-ray buyers, and this single edition serves both groups.
