Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A

If the films are already available elsewhere, what harm is being done by Flicker Alley releasing them as MOD discs? None. You're acting as if suddenly all the other editions are going to disappear, but they're not. You might want to burn the MOD disc, but FA must have a logical reason for releasing...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A

People might not prefer MOD releases over factory-pressed DVDs, but the fact remains that, without them, we wouldn't have hundreds of rare titles sitting on our DVD shelves. For those who live in America and get to see the Warner Archive titles regularly shown on TCM, that might not be such an horr...

Re: Indiegogo: Blackhawk Films DVDs On Demand from Flicker A

I should have been clearer: no one likes them over pressed DVDs. I don't have a huge MOD collection but have had at least one that has not worked and one that failed later. I always back up any MOD discs I get. They are simply not as reliable as a pressed disc. My experience with Warner Archive is t...

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/blackhawk-films-dvds-on-demand-from-flicker-alley" target="_blank" target="_blank Surprised to see that this has yet to be posted here. For some reason Flicker Alley are not promoting it on their website or Facebook page either. Hopefully that's because they've rea...

Re: Caligari Blu-Ray

MoC's Caligari is interpolated, frame for frame, in exactly the same manner as their edition of Nosferatu. So if you were happy with the latter you'll be happy with the former.

Re: Caligari Blu-Ray

Wizard of Oz was scanned in 8K and restored in 4K so I'm not even sure what the issue is here. The resolution it is projected in is down to the individual exhibitor. I'm sure the new Caligari played in 2K in plenty of venues, not 4K. Surely there must be English intertitles?? Not many of us can spea...

Re: Flicker Alley Mack Sennett

Thank you for your reply Paul. I should say that I'm not looking to crucify anyone; in the grand scheme of things it's a minor issue and it won't spoil my enjoyment of the set. I'm still not sure I understand though: Rather than trying to fill HD screens, we elected to retain as much of the original...

Re: Flicker Alley Mack Sennett

I would have thought things like TV safe areas were pretty archaic these days. And it's still inconsistent with the Chaplin set (and about 99% of the rest of the silent Blu-ray catalog). It certainly does affect the image quality, as the films are presented at something less than 1440x1080p. It's of...

Re: Flicker Alley Mack Sennett

I understand that all films across both sets should be 1.33:1, and I believe that is what they all are.

We're not talking about aspect ratios here.

Re: Flicker Alley Mack Sennett

I've sampled a few titles and they do indeed look very good. I can't wait to make my way through the whole thing. I don't understand why they've all had to be so heavily windowboxed though. Even with overscan on I still have to endure large black bars top and bottom. The Chaplin set uses the entire ...

Re: Question for owners of City Girl Blu Ray from MOC

Yeah, it's not just DVDs you're missing out on, but plenty of silent Blu-rays as well. Tabu, Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler, a much superior Nosferatu, Coeur fidele, a slightly superior Battleship Potemkin, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, The Passion of Joan of Arc and Underground.

Re: Non-24fps silents on Blu mastered at 1080p causing jitte

As you can see from the comparison that I posted, there is an example of the frame deletion. The site has taken a frame from the MoC Blu-ray and then discovered that no corresponding frame exists on the Kino, just another duplication in its place. If you select "1920x1080 Fullscreen Comparison" and ...

Re: Commentaries on the new Lobster set of Chaplin Mutuals

Whatever algorithm they used to take the 18fps master they had and interpolate it into 24fps obviously messed up spectacularly and adopted a regular pattern of frame deletion. Either no one at Kino noticed or no one cared. The Masters of Cinema disc follows a precise "3 frames, 1 repeat" sequence fo...

Re: Non-24fps silents on Blu mastered at 1080p causing jitte

The Kino BD has about 10-20% of all frames missing from its encode, as detailed in the comments here: http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=3695&disc2=3360&art=&cap1=34206&cap2=34207&hd_multiID=1398&lossless=&image=2#auswahl" target="_blank The stuttering on that Blu-ray c...

Re: The Hunchback of Notre Dame

I believe the stuttering people refer to here takes the form of the full frame stopping and starting momentarily. This is, after all, what is happening when a non-24fps film is "stretch printed" as it were, to 24fps. Duplicate frames are inserted and for a fraction of a second the image stops and th...

Re: Commentaries on the new Lobster set of Chaplin Mutuals

Waver Boy is right about one thing: The Kino blu-ray of Nosferatu DOES have a bad jitter problem that the UK Masters of Cinema blu-ray Nosferatu does not. I did an a/b comparison and couldn't believe my own eyes. How is it possible in 2014 to manufacture two blu-rays from supposedly the same exact ...

Re: Non-24fps silents on Blu mastered at 1080p causing jitte

Although I'm confident most here who do not like progressive transfers for non-24fps silents know how to set up their TV properly, I will say that I've switched between the two and find jitter somewhat perceptible at 60hz mode, and completely imperceptible in 24hz mode.
