Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

Mr. Duncan....book just came in....incredible...all I can say. The ultimate book on Chaplin...I could get rid of the others. In this day of age of electronics, this volume is an example of the lost art of book making. Oh, and the film strip....who cares! Glad you like it, and thanks for the complim...

Re: Chaplin's World - Chaplin Audio Wanted

It may be a good idea to keep an eye on how much Chaplin is in there when purchasing; I once placed an order based on a name to find that it was just mentioned for a few minutes. A bit of a waste of money that was. So don't just buy based on a search engine hit. Thanks for the advice. Some of the h...

Chaplin's World - Chaplin Audio Wanted

Hi,

I've been asked to help out with the audio guide for Chaplin's World, currently being prepared for a Spring 2016 opening.

It would be great to include the voices of Chaplin and his collaborators. Has anybody come across audio recordings during their researches?

Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

The film strips are cut through the entire film, or there's strips with only opening cards, intertitles and fade in/out? Will be a little disappointing get a strip without a scene, haha. I just got a message from the head of production at TASCHEN, who tells me that all the strips have images. best ...

Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

I ordered last week and got a copy number somewhere close to 9,450. So the first 10,000 are almost gone. Thanks for trying to generate some panic buying! In reality, TASCHEN distribute in batches to different countries, with all the numbers mixed up, and then these are further mixed with copies ava...

Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

Are all the current released copies still part of the first 10,000 run? Yes, the first printing is still on sale worldwide, so it shouldn't be a problem getting it now. Normally, TASCHEN books sell better in the weeks before Christmas - for example, the first printing of The James Bond Archives wit...

Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

Just curious about something...the film strip...is it a piece of nitrate? I ordered the book and don't really care about the strip, but I was wondering. Just because it was in his archive doesn't mean it is "original." It could have been cut from a print struck in the 70's or later. Does anyone kno...

Re: The Charlie Chaplin Archives - Blatant Book Plug

I was disappointed with much of the text, though. Much of it is from the autobiography, of course, but quotes from other people that would have been well-served by giving a date and source just appeared with no explanation. And sorry, but I dont think it was necessary to put the name of the editor ...

Unfortunately, the weight of it took a toll on my shoulder, so I won't be able to get around to seriously going through it until the numbness in my arm subsides (that's my second movie related injury this month). Actually, they are the crossplot for Monsieur Verdoux - then called A Comedy of Murders - that shows which actors are required on which day, and which scene is to be shot each day.

I think it's more like 14lbs. The book comes in its own box, and there will be packaging around that, so maybe that accounts for the extra .4. It's impressively bound, I'm told.

Re: In search of expertise on intertitles

As a voice in the wilderness who has raised this point in the past, the term "intertitle" is an a academic concoction of recent vintage. In the silent era they were called subtitles or simply titles. If one is actually concerned with practices of the film culture of the time, then one should use th...

Esther Ralston in THE KID

Researching documentation on THE KID, I note that a young Esther Ralston played the vamp in the heaven sequence for about two weeks of filming before she was replaced by the younger Lolita McMurray - later Lita Grey Chaplin, of course. Who are those guys in The Idle Class?

I'm still writing/researching The Charlie Chaplin Archives, which will be published by TASCHEN next year. And I still have questions. BTW, besides the drunk in the street James Kelly plays another role in the film. In drag he's the old lady that brings the goldfish in to pawn. He often played old Irish ladies in his days on the stage, and starred in the comedy WIDOW O'BRIEN in the late 1800s. Many thanks for this. Great info. I'v...

I've got all the Mutuals here and I can see that the drunk in the street of The Pawnshop is Kelley, and he looks like the Butler in The Count, and the cameraman in Behind the Screen.

So the old actor is another actor.

If I knew how to embed images, I'd send frame grabs.

Old Actor in The Pawnshop

I'm researching a book on Chaplin and notice that in "The Pawnshop" the old actor declaiming a sob story about the ring he wants to pawn is often credited as Wesley Ruggles, but it isn't. Does anybody know who it is?
