One of the best books I have read on the subject is "A Song in the dark" by Richard Barrios.He deals with early musicals.Now why this won't go all the way for you,it does offer some explanations. I have just finished reading Esther Raltons autobiog.She tells in great detail of the advances made to her by Mayer ,how she rebuffed them and how he threatened to blackball her,and stop her froom working.

He gave a lecture at the BIG South bank whilst here to make Pepper and Salt.Another flop.
I liked his films with Dean Martin when I was a child.He made some funny films on his own,but after he left Paramount his film career went down.
Personally I never much cared for Forsyth.l

They made no less than 6 attempts to kill poor Nova Pilbeam.No wonder she retired shortly after this film.

20thFox used the same plot for their musicals.Boy gets girl,looses girl to best friend,gets girl back when she realises her silly mistake.The poor sucker is often Ralph Bellamy.He's never going to get Betty Grable or Alice Faye.

Saw Sherlock Holmes 1922 on Saturday.Too many intermingled and not one of John Barrymores best performances.

Very much enjoyed the organ interval which proceeded the film.A member of staff came on stage to remind us that we were watching a 70mm presentation.Afterwards they gave us a strip of 70mm film. 3 words to describe the film,overblown,inaccurate,noisy.
