Re: Cliffhanger Serials on Blu-ray: What do you want to see?
Agree about all of the Republics (at least the ones Paramount still owns the rights to, which are most of them)--they would all make great blu rays. Supposedly, most of the Columbia serials (again, the ones they still own the rights to) exist in their vaults...they've released the two Batman serials...

Re: Old Movies in HD: An Ongoing Guide
Have been enjoying these reviews, which closely match my recent purchases. In mentioning Toby Roan, I am reminded that back in the day, The Roan Group released a laserdisc of CHAMBER OF HORRORS that looked quite a bit better than the print on the Kino disc. They even included an alternate title sequ...

Re: WC Fields.
So glad to read this thread. I liked everything he did, including the sad deleted sequence from TALES OF MANHATTAN. Of course, IT'S A GIFT is my all time favorite. "That's a weed, you idiot!" Happy that Universal released W.C. FIELDS COMEDY ESSENTIALS COLLECTION (18 films, 5 discs) that includes all...

Re: Blu-Ray from Kino Lorber "The Adventures of Captain Marv
Unlike most of the other studios, the Republic library is intact in very good to excellent condition (with the exception of some titles that reverted to the copyright owner, such as CAPTAIN AMERICA). Sadly, with the exception of MARVEL, no one bothered officially releasing any from these good source...

Re: Is Keaton's The General going Out of Print?
Don't know what it means, but Kino is reissuing the big Blu-ray box set (Ultimate, 14 discs) on 11/15/2016 with exactly the same content as the 2012 original.....including the old version of the short films collection (1920-23). THE GENERAL is still there as well.

Re: Herschel Gordon Lewis Dead at 90
I received my set yesterday and it's quite a package. Besides the films themselves, the supplements are really great. The original Something Weird documentary, THE GODFATHER OF GORE, is quite enjoyable......and the 1 hour and 9 minutes of out-takes from it! It's presented at 1080i on Blu-ray. The fi...

David: I have the US Digibook edition and it does include a lot of supplements.....all in SD and ported over from the previous 2-disc DVD edition. I notice that the Netherlands version you reference is from WB, so I'm sure it's going to be the same transfer of the film.....just not sure about the ex...

Re: The Devil-Doll (1936)
I love THE DEVIL DOLL! Lionel Barrymore in drag is a hoot! I think it's one of Todd Browning's better 1930s films. WB have recently reissued it on DVD-R, but you can still find the MGM horror set on pressed DVDs from some outlets.

Re: Feu Mathias Pascal (1926)
Thanks, guys, I'll check those out. I have the DVD of HOUSE OF MYSTERY and did enjoy that one. I asked Flicker Alley if they had any plans to release it on Blu-ray and they said "no." I've seen worse quality transfers on Blu-ray, but I guess they have their reasons. The blu of L'Herbier's L’INHUMAIN...

Re: Buster Keaton Is "A Hard Act To Follow"
I have it on DVD from the UK (Network, I believe) and laserdisc (Image). Both presentations are problematic. Some title graphics are missing from both, but all in all, it's better than not having it. Someone mentioned that some footage is also missing from the UK DVD, but I haven't really compared t...

Feu Mathias Pascal (1926)
I recently discovered this film via Flicker Alley's Blu-ray. It's such an entertaining ride that you hardly notice that the running time is just under 3 hours! L'Herbier was clearly a genius and one wishes to see more of Ivan Mosjoukine (aka Mozzhukhin). If you've never seen this one, I HIGHLY recom...

CHANDU....from Kino (blu-ray)
Just had a chance to view CHANDU THE MAGICIAN (1932) from Kino, part of their recent Fox deal. It looks great in HD considering a film of its vintage in the Fox library (some vertical scratches, etc.). The DVD extras have been ported over. Cover art is reversible, one side with the old DVD art (some...

Re: Has Criterion given up on silent comedy Blu-ray?
I haven't checked lately, but I'm pretty sure Criterion has made some Lloyd films available on their Hulu channel that haven't been released to disc yet. I remember that they had Hitchcock's FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT on there many months prior to the disc release.

Universal have announced THE FRANKENSTEIN COMPLETE LEGACY COLLECTION and THE WOLFMAN COMPLETE LEGACY COLLECTION releases on Blu-ray for September 2016. Re: Kino Lorber Releases Rare '30s German Sci-Fi Thriller "G
Having now seen GOLD and MAGNETIC MONSTER blu rays, it becomes obvious why Kino didn't even consider revising the GOLD footage for the latter: it wouldn't match! Sadly, GOLD is in pretty bad shape.....looks like we're just lucky to see it in the original German form. Lots of baked in flicker, print ...

Re: Is it Better Longer or Shorter? "Lost Horizon (1937)
Bill, I prefer the longer version, as that's the version that Capra made. Columbia cut it up for reissue during WWII, removing the anti-war/pacifist messaging and then discarded the trims. So....the message was altered and that's my real beef with the shorter version. Was it too long originally? Per...

Watched this and WOMAN IN THE MOON over the weekend. What a double feature!
Like others, I really had not heard of this film before--and I consider myself at least reasonably knowledgeable about silent cinema! Thanks, Flicker Alley!
This is a film that invites multiple viewings.

Surely THE GOLF SPECIALIST (1930) has that distinction, albeit in a short.
You are, of course, correct!

Thoughts about Uni's W.C. FIELDS 18 Film Collection
W.C. FIELDS COMEDY ESSENTIALS COLLECTION I was very reluctant to pick this 5 disc set up, both for concerns of pricing ($100 MSRP for 5 discs) and compression (4 movies/disc). Recently, I had the opportunity to pick the set up for $40 and went for it. In terms of compression, the average bitrate is ...

This is actually a pretty good to excellent blu ray presentation. Yes, the ID tags and brief intermittent logo bugs are there, but the image is spectacular. Excellent restoration. I didn't find the tags and bugs that big of a deal and actually found them to be much less of a deal breaker than some r...
