It would be lovely if PAVEMENT BUTTERFLY (like SONG, also directed by Eichberg) could also get a release or screening out west. Two foreign silents that actually made efforts to utilize what Anna May Wong was capable of as an actress.

Re: King Vidor's hatred of Cecil B. DeMille's films
Ironic, considering nothing DeMille ever did (in my opinion) comes close to THE BIG PARADE or THE CROWD. I've always felt DeMille among the most overrated of directors, whereas Vidor among the most underappreciated. My two cents after watching almost everything both ever did.

Re: What is the last film you watched? (2019)
Finally caught up with La Strada (1954) in a Criterion DVD from the library. Interesting to see Fellini at the crossroads between neo-realism and the fable and fantasy of his mature style. I see why it won Best Foreign Language Film in 1956, yet it feels like thin gruel compared to La Dolce Vita or...

Has anyone else noticed Flicker Alley's occasional discount codes are rarely (if ever) for new releases/pre-orders? After shipping and tax, you don't really save much (if anything) compared to Amazon Prime.

Re: A SOCIETY SENSATION (1917) Rediscovery and Restoration
Interesting. My understanding is that the 1924 cut was done to primarily promote only scenes that feature Valentino at length, so I wonder how much of the rest of the film he is in. In other words, how much more Valentino will we be getting in the complete print. Obviously, I hope more than a few mi...

Re: SHE'S A SHIEK (1927)
I was present at the 'Mostly Lost' screening last year. SEÑORITA was great fun, but I'm sorry to say the surviving print is patchy in places. There's a significant chunk missing, probably several minutes of running time, when Bebe meets William Powell for the first time, and consequently some impor...

Re: The Legend Surrounding Mary Duncan & The Lost Print of Murnau's 4 DEVILS (1928)
I will go ahead and quote that 2009 article written by Palm Beach Post staff writer Scott Eyman at length in this topic since it is very relevant and interesting: There's a legend about Mary Sanford, and this is what it says: Sometime after World War II - 1948 seems to be the preferred date - she bo...

Re: The Legend Surrounding Mary Duncan & The Lost Print of Murnau's 4 DEVILS (1928)
And by the time Mary Duncan would have borrowed this film (we don't know when, but certainly after 1937), she wasn't anybody anymore.... So Duncan wouldn't have had the clout to borrow a print from the studio. Any studio. If somebody out there has current access to the studio records and can verify...

Re: The Legend Surrounding Mary Duncan & The Lost Print of Murnau's 4 DEVILS (1928)
Too many unanswered questions and too many lapses in logic have led me to the conclusion that the last print of FOUR DEVILS went up in the Little Ferry fire, and elderly Mary Duncan was just telling tales to impress historians and her socialite friends. Your shared skepticism was encouraging... unt...

Re: The Legend Surrounding Mary Duncan & The Lost Print of Murnau's 4 DEVILS (1928)
I suspect Mary Duncan repeated her confession about foolishly tossing the "dangerous-and-disposable" print into the ocean (after screening it for friends) on several occasions, and not just to Bill Everson. In fact, that same elderly film buff I used to know, who claimed to have seen CONVENTION CIT...

The Legend Surrounding Mary Duncan & The Lost Print of Murnau's 4 DEVILS (1928)
I was unable to locate a topic on this specific topic, and it's been on my mind for many years now, so I thought it was time to open up the discussion regarding several questions that I am not sure have been or could be answered. At the very least, I don't think it would hurt, and if anyone has deta...

The fate of THE CITY GONE WILD (1927) with Louise Brooks
I found no topics on this film and the tragic (and infuriating) story regarding its demise, so consider this a tribute to James Cruze's lost silent gangster film, which starred Louise Brooks as Snuggles Joy. The story of the film's lost status, most likely well known to many Lulu enthusiasts and col...

Re: Remembering Renee
The hardest part about watching THE BIG PARADE is being aware of the tragic deaths both stars suffered only years after this film. To me, other than Lillian Gish, Renée had the sweetest smile and most innocent face. To see her cry on film is almost impossible to endure. I'm not sure why, but knowing...
