Re: BARBED WIRE (1927) - Does a 35mm print exist?

In any case, the Grapevine releases are all outdated and with 2020 approaching, it's pathetic we have waited this long for any quality Pola Negri releases (especially with three of her films already restored in Europe). Her last three surviving silents (HOTEL IMPERIAL, BARBED WIRE, and THE WAY OF AL...

Re: My Ten Most-Sought Lost Films.

I wanted to contribute my ten with regard to American films, although they are a fairly predictable lot. However, if even one were to be miraculously found, I would weep oceans of joy (if that were literally possible). Without further ado: 1. 4 DEVILS (Murnau, 1928) 2. THE CASE OF LENA SMITH (von S...

Re: BARBED WIRE (1927) - Does a 35mm print exist?

I inexplicably neglected to mention Pola's final film, Paul Czinner's THE WAY OF LOST SOULS (1929), which has apparently yet to be restored as well, with only a 2002 DVD via Grapevine. I imagine BFI probably owns the rights to that one.

Re: BARBED WIRE (1927) - Does a 35mm print exist?

Both Barbed Wire and Beggars of Life survive in 16mm prints that James Card of George Eastman House ordered from Paramount in 1950. All other prints descend from these unique 16mm originals. I have inspected the original lab invoice in the collection files at GEH. David Pierce Media History Digital...

Re: 2K/4K Restorations & Future BD Releases of Essential Silents

That sounds like a winner. I've never seen either of these two early Dreyers, so I'm excited about seeing quality prints of both for a first-time experience. Another rare release of a Scandinavian silent that I would love to see upgraded is this 2007 release of Rasmus Breistein's The Bridal Party in...

Re: 2K/4K Restorations & Future BD Releases of Essential Silents

Yes. I bought this Blu Ray--which is all region--from an EBAY dealer in December of 2017. A lovely collection. It is still listed on EBAY for less now then I payed then. The DVD version may require an all-region player since that version is PAL. How is the quality of the prints for each? I've only ...

Re: EVANGELINE (1929)

TCM was showcasing Dolores Del Rio tonight for the first time in forever, so it really irked me that EVANGELINE wasn't among the films included in the lineup, whereas TRAIL OF '98 was. Perhaps it was a rights issue, but in any case, my best chance to see this film was tonight and TCM dropped the bal...

Re: Tonka of the Gallows (1930) - a great film, just restored

The packaging for this 2016 release is marvelous and the design of everything is gorgeous. I've ordered the release for EROTIKON too. In case anyone is fascinated by the story of Ita Rina and the career that could've been, there is actually a very interesting documentary released in 2016, "Ita Rina,...

Re: Machiko Kyo, star of Rashomon, Ugetsu, Floating Weeds, dies at 95

She's wonderful in Naruse's underrated Older Brother, Younger Sister (1953), The Wandering Princess (1960), Bonchi (1960), and Mizoguchi's final film, Street of Shame (1956), a criminally underrated masterpiece with Machiko at her best. This is a film that should be held in the same high regard as U...

Re: Tonka of the Gallows (1930) - a great film, just restored

In my experience, most DVD players can deal with PAL. Region codes are another matter. You should check with yours, of course. What year was that release? This is truly a film with a performance that deserves the HD treatment (similar to how I feel about Pola Negri's performance in BARBED WIRE, also...

Could the time difference have something to do with the longer European cut that KINO uses (the longer scenes of Olga Baclanova bathing)? If you want the properly synced Movietone track and the longer bathing scenes, you should hang on to your KINO copy, but it wouldn't stop me from buying the blu-...
